I like they bring up a competition for LH platoon in LF but some of the other stuff they mention is just weird.

Sodo on some ST storylines
Re: Sodo on some ST storylines
The Sodo Mojo piece mentioned a potential Spring Training surprise in lefty Gabe Speier, who has been on the 40-man roster since November when the Mariners claimed the reliever off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.D-train wrote: ↑Mon Jan 23, 2023 10:20 pmI like they bring up a competition for LH platoon in LF but some of the other stuff they mention is just weird.

Perhaps the Mariners prefer five years of the 27-year-old Speier, who will earn the league minimum the next two seasons, over 32-year-old lefthander reliever Andrew Chafin, the free agent whom MLB Trade Values projects with a two-year, $18 million contract.
The 2022 numbers for Speier and Chafin:
GS 17 G, 19.1 IP, 2.33 ERA, 3.78 FIP, 18.2 K%, 6.5 BB%, 0.1 fWAR, 0.7 bWAR
AC 64 G, 57.1 IP, 2.83 ERA, 3.06 FIP, 27.6 K%, 7.8 BB%, 0.9 fWAR, 0.3 bWAR
The 2023 FanGraphs projections for Speier and Chafin:
GS 36 G, 36 IP, 3.71 ERA, 3.86 FIP, 22.3 K%, 7.8 BB%, 0.1 WAR
AC 64 G, 64 IP, 3.65 ERA, 3.67 FIP, 23.8 K%, 8.3 BB%, 0.6 WAR
Over his brief MLB career Speier has limited lefthanded hitters to a .170/.265/.322/.587 line in opponents' 68 plate appearances, although the split was less favorable last season.
Speier has one minor league option remaining.
