If money truly were an issue they would have tried to offload Flexen and his $8M by now. I don't buy that. There's a little bit if flexibility.D-train wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 11:05 pmThey need a back up SS and the excellent defensive SS McCoy was superior to a guy that can NOT even play SS. You have no clue if the money had a role. They have made hundreds of decisions over they years which indicates they are hyper focused on money.harmony wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:08 pmWho is the superior option to Tommy La Stella?
Chances are nearly nil that La Stella's guaranteed 2023 salary of $720,000 played a role in the decision to keep him on the Opening Day roster.
Just as Marco Gonzales' guaranteed salary had little impact in keeping the lefthander in the starting rotation. Chris Flexen's repertoire is far better suited for the bullpen than that of Gonzales.
The could have traded Marco and paid 90 percent of his salary, Flex a at 5 and a lefty in the pen and they would be far better off. They traded their lefty specialist in Swanson who gave up barely over .500 OPS vs. lefties with Gott who gave up about a .800 OPS vs. lefties.
And I wouldn't use McCoy and superior defense in the same sentence. His arm looked relatively weak while we were down there in the desert. But he can pick it.
