The Astros won the World Series without a lefty in the bullpen. The new rules make the LOOGY obsoleteSibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 7:09 pmAren't there usually 2-3 lefties in a bullpen? How do you end up with zero?

I don't know why there is consternation of La Stella over McCoy. Nobody though McCoy was making this team back in January. If La Stella can strap it up, he's physically good to go, I like his ability to get on base and that's why they got him.
As to Haggerty, the only reason why he didn't get infield reps last year is because the team had a healthy Moore and Toro for that work. He came up in this game as an infield player. And he likely doesn't see SS as D-Mo should be back within two weeks. Pretty sure Crawford can handle going a couple weeks without a rest day.
We'll have lefty in the pen at some point this year. No way they don't turn to Bernardino or Speier at some point.
The big question for me is when does Marco get the axe from the rotation?

In a vacuum it is meaningless but just adds to the pattern of making decision for non baseball reasons like Marco in the rotation until he costs us about 4 games.Vogelbomb wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 7:52 pmI don't know why there is consternation of La Stella over McCoy. Marco from todays game against SD is about the best Marco we get and down hill from there IMO. Anything more is sugarD-train wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 8:15 pmIn a vacuum it is meaningless but just adds to the pattern of making decision for non baseball reasons like Marco in the rotation until he costs us about 4 games.Vogelbomb wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 7:52 pmI don't know why there is consternation of La Stella over McCoy. Who is the superior option to Tommy La Stella?D-train wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 8:15 pmIn a vacuum it is meaningless but just adds to the pattern of making decision for non baseball reasons like Marco in the rotation until he costs us about 4 games.Vogelbomb wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 7:52 pmI don't know why there is consternation of La Stella over McCoy. Chances are nearly nil that La Stella's guaranteed 2023 salary of $720,000 played a role in the decision to keep him on the Opening Day roster.
Just as Marco Gonzales' guaranteed salary had little impact in keeping the lefthander in the starting rotation. Chris Flexen's repertoire is far better suited for the bullpen than that of Gonzales.

I like La Stella on the roster. Would I have gone a different route? Yes, but if this blows up in their face they'll be forced to make a decision no matter what. And if we're being honest, Tommy is only here until Dylan Moore comes off the IL which is relatively soon. Provided that Hummel continues to hit.
Re: Roster is set
They need a back up SS and the excellent defensive SS McCoy was superior to a guy that can NOT even play SS. You have no clue if the money had a role. They have made hundreds of decisions over they years which indicates they are hyper focused on money.harmony wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:08 pmWho is the superior option to Tommy La Stella?D-train wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 8:15 pmIn a vacuum it is meaningless but just adds to the pattern of making decision for non baseball reasons like Marco in the rotation until he costs us about 4 games.Vogelbomb wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 7:52 pmI don't know why there is consternation of La Stella over McCoy. The could have traded Marco and paid 90 percent of his salary, Flex a at 5 and a lefty in the pen and they would be far better off. They traded their lefty specialist in Swanson who gave up barely over .500 OPS vs. lefties with Gott who gave up about a .800 OPS vs. lefties.

I know it’s puzzling to have Tommy LS make the team aside from salary, but I’ve seen him play in Chicago and his biggest asset is pinch hitting. Seen him with pop off the bench but less so as a starter. But he’s a few years older now so we’ll see.
