National media on M's outlook this season

Post by D-train » Thu Mar 30, 2023 1:01 am

As the off season began last year we were coming off a 90 win season and our first playoff series win since the Twin Towers were still smoldering. We had a core of young budding stars in Julio, Cal, Gilbert, Munoz and Kirby......and a core of great to above average vets in Castillo, Ray, Geno and Sewald.

We had massive capital available to significantly improve the team both in terms of lives with several valuable trade chips in the form of both prospects and excess mlb pitching, and treasure given we had saved almost a quarter billion since the start of the rebuild and as we recently learned were the most profitable team in baseball last season.

Given that you would think we would begin the season a LOCK to make the playoffs, a damn good shot at the Division, a decent chance at a WS appearance and at least a top 4-5 fav to win it all. Instead we are left with this:

The two objective projection systems have us as less than a coin flip to even make the playoffs:

Five Thirty Eight: 44% odds to make playoffs, 3% odds to win World Series

FanGraphs: Mariners go 83-79, 40.6% odds to make playoffs
