Where do we stand on JP?

Post by Pharmabro » Sun Apr 30, 2023 6:54 am

.238 .371 .734 on the season and .275 .431 .425 .856 over the last 2 weeks.

They have moved him up to the 7th spot but I like his near .400 OBP to loop around to be on base for Julio-TY-JK.

But I know JP is a sore spot for many. The fact that we didn't sign one of the all star level SS the last 2 years is probably front and center.

We'll see how it goes over the course of the season. He could have a pop-up season or two. But one issue with him is that a lot of times when he gets hits it's because pitchers just throw him fastballs over and over again. Like tonight, he got 13 fastballs. So if he's going to level up his hitting ability, somewhere along the way he'll have to cope with pitchers taking him more seriously as a threat, especially if he starts showing semi-consistent power.

And I expect he'll be leading off tomorrow since Julio will likely have the day off.

On May 2nd last season he had a 1.094 OPS. 360 points HIGHER than he has now. We all know how that turned out.

You don't necessarily need your SS to be a big contributor on offense. But, if you're not getting offensive production from SS, then you need to be getting it from somewhere else e.g. 2B, C, or all 3 OF. The Mariners situation is bad, especially considering they also need to fill the DH spot every game.

In general, offense trumps defense. You can only limit the other team to zero runs, but you can score infinite runs. Pitchers can relax with large leads. It becomes less important to make a gold glove grab to prevent a run when you're already winning 8-0.

I kind of like JP. I just wish he didn't suck so bad.

JP was injured last year. I expect JP to end up with 3+ WAR.

I like JP. Just think at his best he'd rank 10-12 among SS's.

Which is fine, except that he's one of the highest paid players on the team. Although that's more of a function of the team not adding anyone worth having so can't hold it against JP.

THIS is what I have always asked from JP. An OBP of over 375, 20 steals and great d. If he can add in 10 homers, 25 doubles, that'd be huge

And for the way Julio is swinging rn, JP should be the everyday leadoff. He has our best obp outside Kelenic

Hes the same player he's always been. Good defender. A bit streaky. Not a lot of pop and decent OBP. I like him batting 9th. Get the rest of the linuep figured out so he can stay there where he belongs.
The poster formerly known as Kingfelixk. With a new forum comes a new boardname. Julio is my guy, plus we share a birthday, so that's Culiooooo

NO WAY! He has the second best obp. WTF is the matter with people? He should be leading off until Julio raises his OBP into JPs ballpark, .350 min before Julio comes up above the 6 hole for me

my lineup:
Crawford ss
Caballero 2b
Kelenic lf
Raleigh c
Hernandez rf/dh
Rodriguez cf
Trammell dh/rf
France 1b
Suarez 3b

then once France and JRod return to actually decent stat lines, go:

Crawford ss
France 1b
Kelenic rf
Hernandez dh
Rodriguez cf
Raleigh c
Trammell lf
Suarez 3b
Caballero 2b

Maybe it's time to trade for Tim Anderson?
