Cleveland wins the 1st ever MLB draft lottery!

That sucks for us. I know many of us have coveted their third baseman. The M's were 17th by record but moved up to 15. But, if the M's could have pulled off a #1 overall pick it really might be organization altering. I mean I looked on at envy with Baltimore's #1/1 pick from 2022 2B/SS
1. Jackson Holliday That dude should be expected up next year and is just raking: in 2023 he rose from A to AAA across four levels as a 19-year-old and really only struggled at AAA if you can call an age 19 SS with a .267 .396 .400 .796 line in 18 games struggling. He had a .941 OPS overall.

Bringing in another Julio/A-Rod/ Griffey Jr. to the team would have been a miracle.

But Ilike the fact that teams that just miss the playoffs might just luck-out and move up to picks 1,2, or 3.

MLB Draft Lottery full odds, draft order for 2024
Here are the odds for each non-playoff team to win the draft lottery:

1. Oakland Athletics (50-112), 18.3%

2. Kansas City Royals (56-106), 18.3%

3. Colorado Rockies (59-103), 18.3%

4. Chicago White Sox (61-101), 14.7%

5. St. Louis Cardinals (71-91), 8.3%

6. Los Angeles Angels (73-89), 6.1%

7. New York Mets (75-87), 4.3%

8. Pittsburgh Pirates (76-86), 3.0%

9. Cleveland Guardians (76-86), 2.0%

10. Detroit Tigers (78-84), 1.6%

11. Boston Red Sox (78-84), 1.2%

12. San Francisco Giants (79-83), 1.0%

13. Cincinnati Reds (82-80), 0.9%

14. San Diego Padres (82-80), 0.7%

15. New York Yankees (82-80), 0.6%

16. Chicago Cubs (83-79), 0.4%

17. Seattle Mariners (88-74), 0.2%

18. Washington Nationals (71-91), 0.0%

I guess our 1/500 chance was too minute to out-luck Clevelands 1/50. But, I still like the format with some reservations. It reminds me of the frozen NY Knicks envelope to get Ewing or Lebron's Cavs getting against odds #1's not once but twice. And how come the team tied for 5th worst record have the worst odds?

I am somewhat in favor of the new lottery system. What do you all think?

ON the Nats'

"The Nationals, despite finishing tied for the fifth-worst record, are ineligible to win the draft lottery because they are a "payor club." That means the club gave revenue sharing dollars rather than receiving, so they are not allowed to be selected in consecutive lotteries (they earned the No. 2 pick in 2023). The Nationals cannot receive better than the 10th pick under the CBA rules."

It wouldn’t have mattered if we got the number one pick as we would probably have picked some winner like Al Chambers.

Some things never change- From said Wikipedia article re Tito Nanni: "Accounts by then-Mariners general manager, Dick Viertleib, later indicated that Kirk Gibson was supposed to be their first round draft choice, but the team's financiers did not want to pay the higher salary that Gibson was likely to ask for."
