How does saving $10 mil cover half a possible $150 mil contract?bpj wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2024 10:37 pmFord will probably end up with a team like the Pirates. Maybe the Marlins or Tigers.
If the choice was between a Ford/Moore platoon or spending an extra $10M on Garver, I'd take Ford/Moore and put the money saved towards paying half of Snell's contract (first choice would be Bauer, but they're pussies and wouldn't do that).
Garver, Urias and Polanco are all going to be disappointments imo.
Garver has the best bat of the group, but he's a pretty mediocre DH option that they paid like a full time OF'er.
Has been a hugely disappointing offseason imo. There are still 5 unsigned players remaining in free agency that are better than the guys we got- that's how we know it was a weak offseason imo.
Just another cost cutting offseason. They're getting praise because they turned over half the lineup and kept the payroll about the same. Whoopity doo.

It covers half the first year, since they have yearly budgets. Or, it would buy 10 Bauers.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Tue Feb 13, 2024 2:46 amHow does saving $10 mil cover half a possible $150 mil contract?bpj wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2024 10:37 pmFord will probably end up with a team like the Pirates. They'd have another Robbie Ray type contract back on the books. Their 40-man payroll obligations for the next 4 years are:
2025: $92.68M
2026: $59.59M
2027: $46.49M
2028: $22.44M
So, forgive me if I don't care that it takes next year back up to $120M.
If they don't commit the $ now, there's no guarantee they will in the future, so, might as well be NOW when they're on the bubble, before we miss another year of playoffs by one game because they didn't do enough.

Re: 3B Platoon
I don't think you're getting him signed at a AAV of $20 mil. Depending on what the total value ends up being think it be closer to $30mil
Re: 3B Platoon
Did you create that doc/spreadsheet???
Damn, bruh.
Re: 3B Platoon
Maybe, Robbie Ray got an average annual value of $23M/yr. (5/$115M).Donn Beach wrote: ↑Tue Feb 13, 2024 3:56 amI don't think you're getting him signed at a AAV of $20 mil. Depending on what the total value ends up being think it be closer to $30mil
If Snell was actually interested in being a Mariner he probably takes $25-$27/yr. Think that's about the only chance we had of getting him to begin with. And it's probably backloaded like Ray's was.
It would obviously be a commitment because then they'd turn around and trade a Woo or Miller for the bat they need, which would add several more million.
But the team would be a playoff team instead of a bubble team.

No, that's done by Cot's Contracts which looks like it's run by Baseball Prospectus.

According to Jerry, they're saving their money for future extensions, i.e. Gilbert, Kirby, Raleigh. Would you want to sign an extension with a cheap franchise? Julio did!

Re: 3B Platoon
Supposedly Snell is asking for like $240 mil. I think if you were to get a hometown discount it still require cranking up the AAV. Something like $150 mil over five years. Need to be something in it for him
Re: 3B Platoon
Julio did that before the current shit show. No way in HELL any of the 3 you mention don't go to FA.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Tue Feb 13, 2024 4:22 amAccording to Jerry, they're saving their money for future extensions, i.e. Gilbert, Kirby, Raleigh. I'd much rather have a Blake Snell + Luis Robert Jr. (from SP Woo/Miller trade) now than an extension of those three in five years.
Dipoto's job is to draft players to replace the ones that leave in free agency. But his priority needs to be putting a championship team on the field NOW.
