Bad Ass Stuff Nolan Ryan

Post by Moe Gibbs » Tue Sep 10, 2019 8:40 pm

45 years ago...June 14, 1974 to be exact...Nolan Ryan threw 235 pitches, struckout 19 Bosox in a 13 inning effort where he got no decision. The Angels ended up winning in 15 innings, 4-3.

If the MLB Channel would televise replays of historic games like these in a Fast Forward Format, I'd gladly watch.

I loved watching Nolan Ryan pitch. He was known for the heater, but I remember he also had a pretty great curve that would freeze batters (or draw weak swings).

324 wins 292 losses, 2 seasons with 200+ walks allowed, 2795 walks allowed career....gotta give MLB Hitters credit for battling him as well as they did.
As a fan, rooting for Nolan Ryan would have been fun [nerve racking?] to watch him work out of so many bases loaded jams after filling the bases with walks.
If automated strike calling ever gets put into play, I think we will see the pendulum shift to the pitchers and maybe a resurgence of complete games, shutouts, etc. with relatively low pitch counts. I think pitchers have been the ones getting squeezed by the Umps over the past few decades.

I really see it on both sides. There seem to be hitters and pitchers that will benefit as well as those that will struggle. It's probable that it leans one way but I doubt it will be a severe leaning.

As a kid the first 2 players who I collected cards of were Nolan and Rickey. Rickey wound up being Nolan's 5000th K and never stole a base off him. Later I started collecting Griffey cards who took my attention back away from the A's.

I can dream of a day when pitchers can wear MPGA Hats...[Make Pitchers Great Again] ;)
That is pretty amazing that RHenderson never stole off of Ryan because I would guess Ryan was sort of slow delivering the ball..but never paid attention to that part of his game.

I wonder if Ventura ever charged the mound again after that. Those noogies must have hurt.

Charging the mound was getting pretty common for a while. I can't remember the last time I saw it happen. Must have been all the roid rage.

You have to remember Ryan was 41-42 when this happened. Ventura was laughed at for getting his clock cleaned by Ryan
