Playoffs?

Post by Captain 97 » Tue Sep 10, 2024 2:12 am

Minnesota and KC both lost tonight. The Ms are now 3 out of the 3rd wild card, 4.5 back in the Division and 5.5 back of the second wildcard. Obviously they will have to take care of their own business and win a lot of games but I think there is a decent chance at least one of those 3 had some struggles and leaves an opening.

ANd their WC position is tied with Detroit, and Boston!

3-out with 18 to go is not impossible but even at the Twin target.
Twins go 9-9 finish at 85-77
Mariners must go 12-6 to tie and then win the tie breaker.

The Astros are 77-66 even if they go for a conservative 10-9 over the last 19 games:

M's would have to go 14-4 to tie. M's lead the series this year 6-4. Most likely if they go at least 14-4they probably go at least 2/3 and take the head to head and the tie-breaker.

These 2 games against the Padres are absolutely key:
We face their top 2 pitchers Darvish 117 ERA+, and King 132 ERA+

Their BP is probably tops in baseball

and they have a 108 OPS+ offense

This 2-game series is huge!

The Twins have lost 15 out of their last 21 They have Cincinnati, Cleveland, Boston and Baltimore left on the schedule. Cleveland and Baltimore are playoff teams, Boston is above .500 and Cincinnati has won 6 of their last 8 including a sweep of Houston. 9-9 might be optimistic for the Twins. M's don't hold a head to head lead against any of the teams in the wild card race so they would need to win that outright. They are up 6-4 on Houston with 3 head to head games remaining. I can't imagine a scenario where the M's could lose that series and still catch Houston so they will probably have the tie breaker there if they can make up those 4.5 games.

If the Mariners somehow scrape into the playoffs Jerry should get little to no credit and Edgar and Dan should be lauded as heros and saviors.

I don't think a sports fan in America can hear that word and not think of Jim Sr.'s rant! That was an all time great rant. That and the guy in Arizona after the Bears scored like three TDs on defense and Special teams and his team blew a Monday Night game. "You want to crown them, then crown them. But we had them on the hook and we let them off!" Damn, I can picture that guy, just can't remember his name!
