Off Season Plan
Trade 1: Mariners trade 1B Tyler Locklear, 2B Michael Arroyo, RHP Michael Morales to the Rays for 1B Yandy Diaz, 2B Brandon Lowe.
M's rationale: The M's need an answer for the next couple years at 1B... Diaz is a lefty killer with a .929 OPS in 123 AB's which makes him the perfect platoon partner with Raley. He's mildly inexpensive at $8 million a year. Since May 1 (he had a horrific April), Diaz is 4th in baseball among 1B's with a 135 wRC+. Lowe was again injured the start the year but since May 1 he's stayed healthy and is 4th in baseball among 2B's with a 128 wRC+. Lowe's got significant power for a 2B, health just always remains the concern. He's due to make $10.5 million a club option that the Rays can pick up and then trade. These are some risky high ceiling low floor trades the Mariners need. At their best, Diaz and Lowe are borderline AS level players... at their worst, welp... we've seen that in the Winker's and Polanco's of the world.
Ray's rationale: Typical Rays trade... get rid of older players making $$ and replace them with players with a lot of control. Locklear seems like a Tampa type player. This is honestly a solid 1 for 1 trade given Diaz's age and reduced production in '24. Arroyo gives them a 2B option who is getting close to MLB ready and will start the year in AA for them. Morales is icing on the cake... a decent pitching prospect added to a farm that has few arms.
Trade 2: Mariners trade OF Mitch Haniger, C Mitch Garver to the White Sox for OF Andrew Benintendi and $5 million cash.
M's rationale: I know, I know... it sounds INSANE. But hear me out. Benintendi got off to one of the worst starts in MLB history. He was worth -1.3 fWAR in the first 2 months of the season. Since 6/1? He's slashing .248/.329/.470/.799 with a 128 wRC+, 11% walk rate, and 19% K rate. He dropped a .952 OPS in August with 7 bombs. He's owed around $17 million a year over the next 3 seasons. Benetendi's $$ is a wash in '25 with Haniger's contract gone and the M's end up paying him $8 million a year in '25 and '26 in totality with all the cash swapped.
WSox rationale: They said they gotta shed payroll. The Sox take on Haniger and Garver's $30 million next season to be rid of Benintendi's $50ish million over the next 3 seasons, saving them $15ish million with the cash thrown in. The Sox are rid of all the bad money after one year in a season where they do not intend to compete.
Free Agent Signing: Mariners sign 3B Yoan Moncada to a 1-year $6 million deal.
Why? Moncada is a bounce-back candidate a lot like Tyler O'Neill. In 2019 and 2021 he was one of the better 3B's in baseball, but injuries have derailed a once promising career. Still just 29 years old, there's still a little meat left on this bone. When healthy, he's a top-10 defender at the position and has featured a solid bat. Beats Rojas and Urias.
Numbers since 6/1:
1. Victor Robles LF: .337/.404/.475/.879
2. Julio Rodriguez CF: .271/.334/.451/.785

Re: Off Season Plan
M's will non-tender: Luis Urias, Josh Rojas, Trent Thorton, Tayler Saucedo...
And will not pick up the option for Jorge Polanco.
This saves about $25 million compared to 2024.
The M's would save $13 million against Haniger and Garver's contracts after picking up Benintendi's $17 million.
This gives the M's about $38 million (again this is all really loose) in cash compared to '24.
Diaz, Lowe, Moncada would all add about $26 million total.
Take arb increases into consideration, Robles and Julio's new money... and I'm eyeballing like a $20ish million increase from 2024's payroll.

Off-Season plan - avoid the forums/news at all costs and show up on day 1 and see what the team is. I guarantee you will live a better life if you go that route

Santos and Brash sets up a solid pen. They aren't going to do a whole lot there I bet other than pick up some lab guys like they usually do.Southpaw773 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2024 9:51 pmJust restack the offense and gut the beleaguered bullpen and bullpen coaching and conditioning staff
Re: Off Season Plan
I actually think we need a left handed power reliever
Re: Off Season Plan
Does Brandyn Garcia have that in him? He’s been good in AA and mlb says he gets up to 97. Wonder if they see him as more of a starter or reliever
The poster formerly known as Kingfelixk. With a new forum comes a new boardname. Julio is my guy, plus we share a birthday, so that's Culiooooo

SoB - thanks for putting this together. I know it took a lot of time, and frankly this is the kind of stuff I like reading...metaphysical navel gazing. Rosterbating. Whatever. I thought this was a fun read.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2024 7:58 am

I saw Benintendi play this summer in Detroit. He struck me as a competent but not flashy LF. But looking at his stats, His best years seem to have been with the Red Sox, and his tenure with the White Sox was bumpy to say the least. Then again, he was surrounded by crap and maybe that affected him - it's hard to look around for inspiration when your team loses 120+ games in a season. IMHO, he'd be a risky bounce back candidate. I feel like this might be a trade of suckage for suckage...just shuffling the deck chairs.
The M's ought to shoot a little higher, in my opinion. My top "get" (after the un-getable Soto, that is) would be Rooker. But his asking price will be insanely high. The dude put up 5.5 WAR this season. My second (or third) choice would be BoSox's Wilyer Abreu. The dude is electric, and Boston has an embarassment of riches in the outfield. Abreu's name has been mentioned in several trade rumors. But it would likely take a Logan Gilbert or George Kirby to make that deal happen. I would be willing to part with Kirby, but not Logan to net Abreu.
I'd be happy with Diaz and Lowe. I'm not sure how even that trade proposal is, but it seems like it would work.
