Winter Meetings Thread

I would say these are the probabilities for this week for Jerry.

He makes a major move: 15%
He makes a minor move: 35%
No moves: 50%

Per Mark Feinsand:

Roki Sasaki has officially been posted, per source. Teams may begin negotiating with him as of Tuesday, with a window to sign between then and January 23.

Trade Castillo for an impact bat. Fold Haniger into the deal if possible. Then sign Sasaki.

Looks easy on paper...

The first one is not likely unless we take on commensurate salary. The second one is impossible. I have no idea why you keep saying that. The third is very possible but completely unrelated to the 1st two. Sasaki can be had for peanuts due to the international signing pool limitations, it is just a matter of who he wants to pitch for.

Let's say Raley was a full time player which would put him at about 5 WAR. Say we needed a starter. Would you trade Raley and his minimum wage salary for Castillo and the corpse of Haniger and have to pay them $40M a year???? No you would not. So why do you think some other team would???

Wow. You're zesty today.

My comments were deliberately glib. Of course it's going to be hard to move Haniger. He's an albatross. He was an albatross when we acquired him from the Giants (.209, 6 HRs, and -0.3 WAR). But take him, we did.

We've moved deadweight in the past (most recently Evan White and Marco Gonzales). It's not impossible, and it will cost more than just Castillo and we'd still have to eat some of his contract.

So yeah. My statements weren't intended to be a fully gestated off-season plan. But Castillo is rumored to be on the block, Haniger is someone I'd like to see move on, and Sasaki is, IMHO, a getable prize.

Sorry, I just didn't get why Castillo would be the guy you package with Haniger. It needs to be a prospect or cost controlled player like Kelenic was. You don't add an albatross with a guy making $25M a year. Zero teams would be interested in that.

No worries. I wasn't clear and was feeling lazy...

Yep. Haniger is going to have to folded into a deal with prospects - maybe a team who wants a starter like Emerson Hancock, plus a position player, plus we eat some contract. But it would save us money to go after someone else and frees up a spot on the 40 man.

So yeah. I can see Castillo being traded for Hoerner. I could see Jerry finding a way to move Haniger, and those 2 moves would free up some capital.

I understand Sasaki isn't about the money and more about where he wants to be. But god I would hate for it to be the Mets or the Dodgers. Whatever pitch we need to make to get him, make it. If Castillo goes, I would love to see Sasaki in the rotation.

I don't think Haniger gets traded. I think they've probably explored those deals and don't want to package the prospects that would be necessary to offset the money, and this is why they're bending on Castillo. If ownership won't expand the budget, to free up space you have to go to where the money is, and Castillo has the highest salary on the team going into 2025. And with Castillo gone and Haniger and Garver dropping off after 2025, you're in a better position to sign one or two of the young players going into 2026.

If I was him I would want to go some place where I was the big fish in a little pond. If he goes to LA he will be a baby Minnow in the Pacific Ocean. Here it would be one of the Whales in Green Lake.
