The problem is always staying in that base and allowing any competent QB to just make basic read-and-throw plays because you know where the mismatch is immediately - and it's almost ALWAYS going to be a TE/WR matched up on a LB. Jamal Adams may be the guy that can wreck those underneath routes with blitzes or coverage.

Huard said that exact same thing this morning. Said he feels like QBs are simply picking on Wagner and Brooks, that part of our soft zone. I have always just HATED the fact that our LBs are so involved in coverage, and yet are always so bad at it. He agrees with you that Adams will help, and litteraly said in both the pressure package and the coverage package. There are a few in this forum that probably just threw up in their mouths when they read Adams and coverage!

ALL linebackers have to cover - all of them. It's part of the assignment - and it's not that Wagz or Brooks suck - it's that they are not as good as the secondary guys - THAT'S why they are the mismatch - it's not that they suck - it's the most favorable match up for the offense and the QB's read this and go there - and every single defense in th NFL faces the exact same situation. A TE or WR on a LB always favors the offense. Adams value is in creating confusion for the QB - you donlt knwo what his assignment is going to be - and that makes it harder on the offense - they have to make different reads. I have no problem with Adams in coverage - this narrative that he can't cover is utter nonsense. Dude can do it all - he's like a linebacker that CAN cover and that is trouble for any offense. Just like you don't want your secondary guys being run stuffers - it's not what they excel at - LB's are run stuffers meaning they are less adept at coverage. These are the match ups the QB has to read and react to.

LBs blitz all over the league, and are also taken off the field on third and long all over the league. Just not here. How was Wagner effective in LA and not here? He was used differently.

Agreed. Personally, I wasn't excited to hear that Wagner was coming back. No disrespect, I love the guy. But at this stage? Hopefully he can mentor the young guys.

Wagner has a 76.9 PFF grade. Not sure if these grades includes yesterdays game.
