How about saying it this way....Smith, and most of the starting offense, will be acclimating to the offense during practice and sitting out preseason games. Howell will be leading everyone else during the exhibition games because the Seahawks need to find out if the backups are truly NFL-caliber players.

Okay, but it's not what condotta said
Howell to get a sense of how he is acclimating to the scheme of new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb.

PJ should have a chance to acclimate as well?

Is there really even a competition for backup QB? Probably no more than there is for starting QB. It's all settled.

Walker nearly beat the Seahawks last season, maybe they were impressed. Probably a question of carrying him on the practice squad
Walker threw for 248 yards, one touchdown and a pair of interceptions in that loss, the second of which was a Julian Love interception, off the helmet of a blitzing Jamal Adams, that helped the Seahawks secure a 24-20 victory.

As Howell has tried to find his footing and get more comfortable running Grubb's offense, Walker has played with poise and consistently delivered catchable footballs to his receivers, even flashing unexpected juice with his arm throwing downfield into tight windows. Completing one of the most impressive throws by any of the quarterbacks all day, he fired a 25-yard missile to tight end Brady Russell on a post route, hitting him in stride right on his hands with great velocity.

Only three days in, the Seahawks will give Howell every opportunity to find his groove, and he's at a disadvantage compared to Smith without previous relationships with any of the team's receivers. But Walker didn't sign until mid June and he seems to have better command of the offense right now, which could be a cause for concern if the gap between the two backups continues to shrink.

"Cause for concern" lol. I don't think anyone really cares about the gap between Howell and Walker.
