Condotta's grades

Post by Michael K. » Mon Nov 18, 2024 3:08 pm

This is what I have been saying for some time now. Stop talking about how many tackles the LBs have, and start looking at where they occur.
Inside linebacker
The other big story of the week was the decision to waive leading tackler Tyrel Dodson and pair rookie Tyrice Knight as the starting weakside linebacker alongside recently acquired Ernest Jones IV in the middle.

It looked like a master stroke Sunday. Considering the opponent, this was the best ILB play they have gotten all season as Jones had 13 tackles — six within 2 yards of the line of scrimmage — and Knight 10 more as the 49ers never got the big runs that have so often killed the Seahawks in these matchups.

Grade: A.

I was happy we went after Jones, and had no problem getting rid of Dodson. Same with Bobby and Brooks. I just recall them making TONS of tackles after either after allowing their guy to catch a pass for a first down, or after the ball carrier had gained several yards. No attacking. Maybe that was the style of defense we played, but it sure seemed like Dodson and Baker were very similar. Macdonald must have noticed that too.

I liked the Knight pick. He's looking like the best pic of the draft right now given where he was taken

Bobby's 2023 season
Becoming only the third player to accomplish the feat, Wagner eclipsed 100 tackles for a 12th consecutive season and led the league with 183 combined stops. Consistently making stops behind or near the line of scrimmage, he finished with 11 tackles for loss, a league-best 48 run stops, and an average depth of tackle of 2.6 yards, which tied for 10th best among qualified linebackers. Leaving few tackles on the field per usual, he also posted an excellent 4.8 percent missed tackle rate and missed just nine combined tackle attempts in 17 starts

Not sure which year you are referencing. His last two years with us, I sure don’t remember it that way. Maybe it was just him always getting beat in coverage, but we gave up a shit ton of first downs those years,

I remember you made a post about him being a sleeper or some such. I did not think his measurables looked impressive at all. But I remember when we picked up the 2nd Griffen brother who was timed at a 4.38-40 time, I envisioned Micah Parsons off the edge. But when I watched him play, he had no idea where to go. Brooks was another pajama-ninja. So, I hope he plays bigger and faster than his combine numbers suggest.
