Teams will explicitly keep players whom they feel would be claimed in the initial waiver claim period (which ended at 9:01 a.m. on Wednesday) only to fill their spot on the 53-man roster the next day in hopes of sneaking them back onto the practice squad in the second wave.

That appears to be what the Seattle Seahawks are doing, as there were some strange personnel group totals on the team's initial roster (i.e., three inside linebackers and five tight ends). Less than 24 hours after the initial announcement, Seattle has already made two moves that will require it to clear two spots on the 53-man roster.

What I'm hearing: The Seahawks ranked in the top 10 in defensive efficiency and defensive EPA last year in Mike Macdonald's first season as their coach, but they still finished in the middle of the pack in yards allowed and points allowed. In their second year in Macdonald's system, they should be dominant. His defense has worked everywhere he has been, including the Ravens and the University of Michigan. His ability to scheme up pressures is as good as anyone's. It takes time to learn a new scheme, but after playing in it for a year, Seattle's defensive players are primed for a massive season on that side of the ball.

Biggest move: The Seahawks released Marquez Valdes-Scantling after they couldn't find someone to trade for the veteran wideout and the $2.5 million that remains on his one-year contract. From a financial standpoint, that had to be a tough move to make since he is guaranteed another $1.5 million on top of his $1.5 million signing bonus. But from a competitive standpoint, it was their only choice absent a trade. Seattle signed Valdes-Scantling to be its WR3 and to help replace some of the speed the offense lost in the DK Metcalf trade. But because Valdes-Scantling doesn't play on special teams, he couldn't be any lower than that on the depth chart if he wanted to make the team. Rookie fifth-round pick Tory Horton clearly outperformed Valdes-Scantling over the summer, as did Jake Bobo, Dareke Young and Cody White, all of whom made the 53 behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp. -- Brady Henderson

Henderson, is that his name? I thought it was an interesting point, the defensive efficiency relative to the actual yards and points allowed. He had to come up with a prediction, I think that one is pretty safe actually. There should be improvement. There was pretty significant improvement second half of last season. I think they added talent, the talent they had will understand the schemes better. They have a great defensive coach, anything less than a top ten defense is a disappointment isn't it? I posted it I guess because I think he is correct, he laid it out clearly
