I doubt that Pete and John thought there was no chance at all that he would fall off the wagon. But I also doubt they felt it was going to hurt the team to sign him and have him fall off the wagon.

The fact that the Patriots gave up on him with their shallow WR corps was a huge red flag. Butn as Michael pointed out, he did make a few big catches in some close wins so it paid off. The cost was losing Gary Jennings.
