25 most intriguing players list
25 most intriguing players list
What Brock Huard says…
“Shaquem was the most intriguing draft prospect 14 months ago: a linebacker who ran a 4.3 40, and who plays with one hand. I mean, he was he was so doggone intriguing. And add in the fact that he ends up with his twin brother in Seattle. But last year was a bit of a rocky road. He gets thrown into the fire well ahead of the time he should’ve. He wasn’t ready to play in Denver in Week 1, he just wasn’t. He was not ready coming out of the system he came out of, where he was asked to just run around and make plays — and now he’s got to get to the NFL and take K.J. Wright’s spot in the season opener in Denver? You could see they began to target him, and he was struggling in coverage. And really, after the first couple weeks, did not get another shot to play linebacker. He got an awful lot of shots to play special teams and did that at a high level. But he has now watched this team draft two new linebackers, and switch him from a weakside linebacker to a strongside linebacker position, and he’s watched his job security go from 100 to 50, maybe.”
Why is he on this list?
“The reason he’s on this list is because of the positional change,” Mike Salk said. “That’s why I put him here. Every time I saw him play in college he was getting after the quarterback. And one of the things that makes him stand out is using that speed to come off the edge and get to the quarterback. The Seahawks didn’t use him to blitz or do anything rushing the passer at all last year, and that’s where he’s said he feels most comfortable. He’s so athletic — don’t they have to try everything to make it work?”

Re: The Griffin conundrum
here is a blogger who felt the Pats should go after Griffin in the draft...You play Griffin before he is ready, at a new role, and then kick him to the curb. He did in fact play well on special teams. Here they talk about his pass rush potential even before he is drafted but PC doesn't bother to take advantage of it. How about giving him some coaching, playing in a role he feels comfortable with and see if he can hack it
MMQB’s Connor Orr added that Griffin would fit well with a defense that is “comfortable subbing frequently and playing a certain type of matchup defense.”
The Patriots are one of those teams. They sub frequently. They have pass-rushing specialist — or least players who play solely on passing downs. Griffin would need to be more than a pass-rusher, as he would have to project well in coverage, too. But with his athleticism, the Patriots might see potential in shaping the linebacker to their system, much like they did with Marquis Flowers in 2017.
Griffin is what the Patriots system needs. They need a pass rusher. They need a speedy, athletic linebacker. And he’s a more of a proven entity than his draft stock lets on. He finished his junior season when he won AAC defensive player of the year with 92 tackles, 20 for loss, 11.5 sacks, seven pass deflections, one interception and two forced fumbles.
Even if Griffin can’t make a huge impact in on defense year one — and it sounds like he’ll need time to adjust to the NFL after five years in the AAC — he should be one of the team’s high-impact special teams players. And Bill Belichick rarely hesitates to add special teams players in the fifth round, where he took long snapper Joe Cardona, punter Zoltan Mesko and punt and kick coverage extraordinaire Matthew Slater. Perhaps, Belichick might spend more on a player with a good chance at becoming a defensive role player or starter.

Re: The Griffin conundrum
that is really what its about with Belichick, figure out what a player can do and see if it can be put to good use, no idea if he get anywhere with Griffin but i doubt he go about it by focusing on what he wasn't good at
http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/21 ... offs-starsThat is probably the best example of the difference between Belichick and most of the other teams around the NFL. While they primarily focus on what guys can't do, Belichick just figures out what they can do well and only asks them to do that. Seems easy enough, but a lot of times in life, the genius is in the simplicity.

ohhhhh because he manages to take his team to the SB on a fairly regular basis?...they say the NFL is the copycat league, i don't mind some copycatting. Its probably not an issue now anyway since Pete seems interested in trying Griffin as a pass rusher but I am kind of curious why it took a season to come around to it.
