It wasn't so much that as that they burned a 1st round pick on him. He may be a big athletic talent, but i'm not so sure about the mental aspect. Weight issues in his second year does not bode well. I'll be curious to see how he looks physically when he finally gets back on the field because he doesn't appear to be the work-out warrior type.
The weight issues are hindsight. Taking a RB from a non big 5 conference isn't. Should have taken Chubb or Michel from Georgia if they wanted a RB. Both have massively outperformed Penny.
That is hindsight. Penny gained over 1000yds from scrimmage more than Chubb did in his senior season plus he returned 8 kicks/punts for TD's. Penny was AP 1st team All America. Chubb was 2nd All SEC. Penny caught the ball out of the back field better. While a surprise pick. Penny was the best pick at the time.
Picking a guy in the Mountain West conference with teams like San Jose St. and Nevada Las Vegas over a guy in the SEC with teams like Alabama and LSU is like trading for a guy in the PCL instead of a guy with similar stats in the National League.

Yep Marshall Faulk and LaDainian Tomlinson were horrible RB's coming out ofthe WAC/MWC. Penny broke a lot of their records

Exceptions to every rule. The second we picked him I was skeptical so that is the antithesis of hindsight.

And here we are:

Career yards:
Penny 789
Chubb 2,782

Hey, you mean the stats changed when they played similar competition!? Odd. Chubb faces NFL Defenses on a week in and week out bases in the SEC. Take a look at how the game has changed since Falk and LTD. Sorry, back then, IMO, the talent discrepancy wasn’t as great. The SEC is basically a farm system for the NFL now.

I was skeptical of the Penny pick, but was hopeful. This pick looks worse than it could. I hated that he was a first rounder at the easiest position to play and wasn’t ready, but he seemed to be getting it before the injury last year.

Injury to a RB, where do you hear that...besides everywhere. Reason number one, two, and three why I love the way we play offense now as opposed to the past several years. Holmgren is probably at home breaking shit that he didn’t have this group of playmakers in the passing game! Shit, he would have never called a run play!
