Coach Speak at it's worst

Post by Michael K. » Fri Sep 26, 2025 1:28 pm

“Sam’s playing out of his mind right now,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. “You see him. He’s just such a cool customer. But he’s a guy on a mission. He’s so determined.”
So, you are so impressed with your QB, that you played a defense minus it's top three CBs and threw the ball a mere 26 times, only 12 called pass plays in the entire first half. So? Knowing the team you were playing has a pretty stout defense, and knowing they were missing their top three CBs? Your first half game plan with the QB playing out of his mind was to limit his attempts? 35 carries in a game that you nearly lost, BECAUSE you didn't play aggressive?
Macdonald said the Seahawks “wanted to be aggressive there” and try to win the game and not wait for overtime.
Why wasn't the follow up question..."wouldn't it have been a moot point if you had just been aggressive in EITHER of the drives before?" Bullshit MM. Aggressive for you you is grunting when you are taking a shit so you can rush the process a bit.
Said Macdonald: “This is one of those things we’re going to be able to learn from. We need to be more effective in those situations.”
Must have been talking about closing out the game on Offense and not putting his Defense in that position, right? Wrong, he was chastising the defense for not saving his conservative ass. NO ONE PLAYS THE GAME THIS WAY, and it's for a reason. You simply can NOT give the other team a chance. The reason guys fall down short of the goal line is so the other Offense can't take the field. And we've decided having the defense on the field is the best way to win. Fucking ridiculous.

It's better to win than lose, and I am very pleased with our Special Teams. ST mistakes by our opponents, and solid play by our own unit, were HUGE in our win over Pitt and again last night. Myers has no shot to make that kick if it's five yards further our, and those five yards came on a ST blunder by AZ. I have no clue why his ball breaks right like a fucking slider, but at least we got the ball to the other hash mark on the game winner.

I said JSN would struggle as a #1, and I was very worried about Darnold. So far? I was wrong. The only reason those two aren't becoming Fantasy Football darlings is their coach is so afraid of the forward pass it's almost comical. I'm very pleased to be wrong there, but Kubiak and one fucking Rookie Guard did not cure the run game, and until these guys realize that simply butt sniffing with the tailback late in close games isn't good enough? We are going to lose to teams better than AZ. This team is 4 and 0 and looking solid, if the coaching staff didn't act nutless.

This defense? With the small improvements in the run game? This team is scary good....if they aren't coaches scared. I'm sorry, it's true. That was one of the most gutless fourth quarters I've watched from a coaching staff.

“Look, when we get into four-minute [situations], this is one of those things we’re going to be able to learn from. We’ve got to be more effective in those situations,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. “In field goals, every yard matters. So it’s not like you’re at this magical spot on the field and field goals are automatic. So you’re trying to maximize gains. We have to be better in that fringe area overall as an offense.”

Two different articles, two different perspectives on this quote. Vorell's quote makes it obvious that MM WAS talking about the offense there. The one I posted above was taken from a paragraph speaking to the defensive "collapse". So? I take back some of my criticism. I agree with MM that we need to do better in that situation. But it starts with him allowing us to play fucking football instead of being scared.

I had thought, or at least hoped, that the Seahawks were done with turtling up and trying to eat up clock in the 2nd half with a two score lead with the exit of Carroll but it appears that Macdonald shares that philosophy. All it accomplishes is to give a psychological boost to the other team and make them believe they can come back. What is so unattractive to these coaches about the notion of continuing to do what got you the lead? I just don't get it.

Defensive minded guys, with the exception of Belichick I guess, seem to be more afraid of taking a risk and having to answer to it then they are answering to why they blew the lead. They can make excuses for blowing the lead. I love how Sherman pointed out last night that the Defense should have held the lead. As great as the LOB was? They were many times responsible for why Russ had to lead a comeback. Second and goal as a case in point. Back to back TD drives to make it even a requirement for us to get to second and goal. You don't make that happen if you move the ball. BUT, MM would rather settle for a long FG, or punt the ball, then have to answer for a what if scenario like an incomplete pass stopping the clock. Which is pathetic. There was what? Five minutes left when Mayer missed from 52?

Even in this forum we had calls calling out Mayer. It was a fucking 52 yarder, and our HC was more than willing to force him to kick it from that distance because he played pussy ball the entire fourth quarter.
