All-in?

Post by Pharmabro » Sun Jun 13, 2021 7:53 am

I am wondering if the pulse of fandom is with me or not.

I see there are a couple of clear upgrades available in free agency.
We could get a bit of an upgrade at center and right tackle.

Schwartz is a premium tackle pro-bowl type who would be a game-changer.

In 2020 Schwartz was a 75 PFF but was injured. In 2019 he was a pro bowl type with an 84 PFF 1046 snaps 5 penalties 0 sacks. In pro-football-ref, he has had as high of an "AV" score as 19. 15 was his score in 2019

Vs. SHell, who had a 72.7 PFF and was injured a lot, gave up 3 sacks and 4 penalties in his best year in 2020. SHell's best year in 2020 gave him an AV score of 6 in 11 games, but even if you scale up for the full season, that is only 9, so Schwarts is double the best Shell.

C Austin Reiter Reiter's worst year is better than Pocic's best.
AV Reiter's best 9
Av Pocic's best 7
PFF
Pocic's 2020 62.4
Reiter's 2020 70.9

Other than O-line, you have a few CBs out there, DL, etc.

My biggest push is that you go out and get Mitchell Schwartz. Duane Brown is a pro-bowl tackle, and his best Pro-Football-Ref "AV score is 13. Schwartz has a 19. And he plays RT as is. Schwarts is a huge upgrade over Shell. Schwartz may be a top 5 tackle in football and might take an incentive-laden deal, but I would be looking to lock him up for the next few years. Adding Schwartz gives you book-end pro bowl tackles and solid players inside. The Hawks ranked 14th in O-line in 2020.
Iupati once had a 15 AV season which is studly but was pretty good for Seattle in 19&20, but injuries gave him an AV 5 score. Gabe had an AV 9 score in 2020. Gabe Jackson 2020 PFF 67.3 Iupati 67.8. Health matters

If we add Schwartz, that bumps the line into the top 10, if not the top 5. Giving Russ time to cook and Carson and co. a top-of-the-line line?

Is there anything I am missing?

Do the people who selected "restructore Bobby and Russ" understand that Wilson's asking price on his next contract would go way up if they did that? It doesn't matter as much with Wagner because he is probably gone after 2022 if he doesn't re-sign for whatever JS offers.

Well, hopefully a balooning salary cap accommodates that in the future.

I have heard that before but based on what? Isn't just a case of moving money on paper. I don't see the logic in claiming he would ask for more money.

I guess I don't get it. So, they are moving money around on this deal and adding it to his next one?

Don't make me read the article again, it was unpleasant enough the first time.

I don't buy it. The notion that players use the cap hit as a value to negotiate seems... off. Somebody like RW or BWagz is going to have their value dictated by the OTHER top players at their positions, not the cap hit to their current team. Anyway, I vote for stay-the-course and keep things flexible. Restructuring to go all-in on this season is short-sighted. If they want to do it at the trade deadline to make some big move that puts them over the top, that's different.

The article makes the point that moving the money would give Russ to use the franchise tag rules in the most recent CBA against them. The rule says that if franchised Russ would get 120% X (previous year's cap hit)
So, in 2024 Russ's negotiation starts with the leverage to avoid a franchise tag that would be worth 40M 2023 cap hit X120% = 48 M /1yr with no moved money
vs
46M 2023 cap hit x 120% = 55.2 M for 2024
2025 = 66 M

so with money moved all 12 million the leverage is 121M 1st 2 years vs 105M 1st 2 years.

I get it. This also has to be worked into his trade value. Thanks for the 411.
