Bill Belechick was a defensive coach on the 1983 Giants team that won 3 games. He got promoted to defensive coordinator after the 1984 Season and they won the Super Bowl a couple years later in 1986.
I am not sure that finding an example from almost forty years ago is the best way to prove this point.
 E for Effort though. Incredible pull Captain.
Wasn't a pull I just figured I would start with the most successful coach and go from there. I bet you that every good coach has been on a bad staff at one point or another. Hurtt wasn't responsible for the scheme, the game planning or the in game calls. Its entirely possible that he is a great coach who was just stuck on a staff with some idiots.

Absolutely. I was in basic training led by drill Sergeants with the IQs of Termites, coincidentally in 1986.

Seahawks defense putting premium on communication and accountability in new scheme

But even without some of the key vets who will take on significant leadership roles when they return, Hurtt feels the defense is making significant progress.

One, he said, is in understanding the importance of accountability and that the new defense will only work if everyone does their part, starting with the learning and teaching going on right now.

“To me, that’s everything,” Hurtt said. “That’s something that you have to do. It doesn’t matter, whether it’s is an established player like Jamal or Q Diggs or a young guy. Everyone, coaches as well, has to be accountable to what’s going on out here. They have to feel that standard.”

Matt Calkins from the Times:

"But perhaps most vital is the new DC.

One is never quite sure how much autonomy a defensive coordinator coaching under Carroll has. Pete is a defensive-oriented coach, and is considered by many to be the brains behind those historic Legion of Boom days.

But Hurtt has already made an imprint by changing the Seahawks’ base defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4."

In the Early 90s when guys would call into the Sports Babe on KJR she would always, "Ok we got a rich guy on a car phone".

I am going to start referring to you as a "rich guy with a Seattle Times subscription". :)
