so they're playing the #1 offense against the #2 defense, and #1 defense against the #2 offense??? How does that make sense?

Seems they always do that but I'm with you.

I know Covid often causes loss of sense of smell but PC must have lost his vision as well if he needs to watch film to see who won the day....
So, he is loyal to Smith and likes what he has seen!? I wonder if it was the one win in four games he played that makes Pete love Gino? Was it that he once punched a team mate in the face? Cuz that seemed to work for Percy! Maybe it was his off season DUI.

Jesus Christ Pete. That fucker would have spent 30 minutes telling us all about Russ's 9 completions if he went 9 for 20. This isn't a real competition and I am starting to believe those that say we are tanking.

Geno was actually pretty decent in his 4 games, up until mistakes at the end of 3 of them. That is the difference between a good QB and a backup QB, but there is evidence of an NFL QB there. Not a GOOD NFL QB, mind you, but he knows what Pete wants, and Pete knows what he's getting. Maybe Lock is better at all those things, maybe not, but we won't know until we see him on the field against an actual team.

You're right about it not being a competition, but not in the way I think you meant. It's an open competition, just between two guys that both aren't good enough to have the job. It's kind of like if all of us had a competition to be the kicker (I was technically a kicker for a couple weeks 30 years ago, but now I pull a hammy just trying to get off the couch).

Lock is good enough, but he doesn't belong to a "disadvantaged" group. ;)

Ok, I think I figured it out.

1. Pete says for the beginning that Geno is the leader in the clubhouse. I am sure that was part of the elongated contract negotiations. They needed to keep Geno happy in case Lock didn't work out.
2. Right at the beginning of Camp they say they have a plan but are silent on what it is.
3. Geno not surprisingly goes with the 1s all the way up to the mock game.
4. Lock is the clear stand out at the mock game
5. Pete plays coy and due to the plan to keep Geno 1st on the depth chart through the Steelers game. (He wisely isn't going to make a move based on a mock game.)
6. Lock outplays Geno in Pittsburgh
7. Lock named new #1 next week.
8. If 6. doesn't happen then Geno stay as the starter until it does.
