Unless the word has been re-defined (which is entirely possible these days), it can only describe a group, not an individual.

it is a group, it's being used as applying to a hiring practice that includes women and minorities. The person isn't diverse, it's the hiring practice that got them the job, a diverse employee is an employee that represents that group.

They are not calling them that. The employee isn't diverse, it's the designation for the group of employees they represent. I would say it's clumsy. You could say, the employee is a diverse hire. It's a designation for a type of employee. Diverse isn't describing the employee, it's describing the hiring practice

They should call that person what they are, then - a quota filler.
