It's nice that he won that but don't you have to have been good at some previous time in order to come back?

I don't think there are any. Just saying the term "come back" implies he was once good then suffered some kind of set-back from which he recovered to once again be good.

From Wiki:
After two inconsistent seasons as the Jets' starting quarterback, Smith eventually lost his starting position due to injuries in his final two years with the team. He then spent time as a backup for the New York Giants, Los Angeles Chargers, and Seattle Seahawks before unexpectedly making a career resurgence as the Seahawks' starting quarterback in 2022, earning his first Pro Bowl selection, having his first winning record and playoff berth as a starter, and leading the league in completion percentage.
I suppose that could qualify as a comeback.

the important question is did Geno get any MVP votes?? They announced the finalists, but with the new voting system, he certainly could. I want this so bad just because I know it would fuck with Russ' mind.
Re: Geno Wins Call Back POY Award
You could easily make the case that he came back from obscurity.

. it is typically given to a player who shows perseverance in overcoming adversity from not being able to play the previous season, such as an injury, or for playing well in comparison to the previous year's poor performance. If a player can come back from such adversity or play at a high level over the previous year, they will usually be favored to win the award. The winner is selected by a nationwide panel of media personnel
