So, he hit him in the chest, and that is too high? Should have taken out his knees I guess?
It was definitely crown of the helmet and it hit him in the bottom of the facemask or very close to it. You can hate the rule all you want, but that will get called targeting every time and was the right call based on the rule. Don't drop your helmet to create contact if you don't want the call. It doesn't even need to be head or neck area if its the crown of the helmet.

He didn’t drop the helmet. You and other BYU fans are the only ones to see it that way. It was a violent hit, but a clean hit, and the call was as bad as the rule. As the announcer said while they escorting the kid off the field like a criminal, just because the head bounces back doesn’t mean the helmet was hit.

Once more, remember this when careers are being ended because players are constantly making that hit below the waist.

What Michael said. Coach Petersen and his staff have taught their players well, hence why it's rare for any of them to be called for targeting. The announcers themselves said it wasn't targeting as well. I felt bad for Tryon who tweeted from the locker room that he wished he could be out there with the team.

So if a BYU player did exactly what Tryon did, that's targeting and he should be ejected from the game, right? Or will you call it a good clean hit? Can't have it both ways.

The refs that reviewed the play and made the call saw it that way as well. The helmet may not have got Wilson in the facemask, but it was high, and within inches of the facemask "neck area". You don't have to like the rule, but that's the rule. You don't want to get called for a penalty, put your head to the side, use your shoulder and wrap him up at the waist. It's not a hard thing to do. There is plenty of room between the top of the chest and the knee.

A BYU player did exactly that 2 weeks ago and I it was the right call. Put your effing head to the side and wrap up around the waist. Simple as that. Don't drop and lead with your helmet, especially high in the chest and anywhere near the head of the other player, especially well after he throws the ball.

The chest is the strike zone. Bad call, bad rule.

He didn't launch and he definitely did not drop his head and hit with the crown. He put his facemask right in the chest. I think it got called just because it was a little high. I can see how that would be interpreted as hitting in the neck area. I thought it was borderline and that being the case it seems like they should stick with the call on the field which was a no call. There were other calls in that game that worse in my opinion. I still cant figure out how they called interference in the end zone when the ball was thrown in the complete opposite direction from where the receiver was running.

Like I said, if that hit is too high, what happens when every five snaps someone blows a knee from a low hit?

Stupid rule, stupid call...and I agree with the BYU coach. Stupid penalty enforcement. The kid makes a football play and gets escorted off the field like a criminal. He could have speared the guy in the nuts and stomped on his hand while getting up and not only NOT been ejected, but he wouldn't miss the first two quarters next week. Nope, just woulda been a 15 yard penalty...for something he did on purpose!

It was a pathetic call, which took a fucking review to even be enforced, and it is an even more pathetic rule.
