Rutgers is considered the birthplace of college football
The first intercollegiate football game is played between Rutgers and Princeton on November 6, 1869, in a field on College Avenue.
They won the national championship that year, the only one they have ever won.
And I thought the M's drought was long...

Kirt Herbstreit calling Rutgers a dark house playoff team. He points to their schedule but wouldn't that be weighted in terms of making the playoff?

“It’s weird, you think about the Big Ten, obviously,” Herbstreit said. “What is there now, 18 teams? You go down your list, a lot of it comes down to the schedule.”

The schedule has been a talking point for Rutgers since it was released. It will not feature Ohio State, Michigan, or Penn State for the first time since the Scarlet Knights joined the conference in 2014.

“Someone is going to come out of that conference that you really didn’t expect, whether that’s an Iowa, who knows?,” Herbstreit said. “Whoever has the most manageable schedule. Rutgers has a schedule that’s, by Big Ten standards and this Big Ten world that we’re in, they can make a little bit of a run.”

Maybe he is just talking about the B10 Championship game. I guess if by some miracle they win it they would have to go, right? 12 team playoff now.

Yeah, twelve teams, here's the rest of the story. I've become curious about Rutgers obviously. The consensus seems to be they should have a pretty good team. they've added some pieces to a returning core, a quarterback being the significant guy. They are considered to have a good defense. I've decided the huskies season turns on if they can finish ahead of them
Kirk Herbstreit is one of the top voices in college football, both on College Game Day and in the booth.

So, how much does the former Ohio State quarterback really know? Rutgers fans are hoping a whole lot after his latest comments.

Herbstreit was a guest on The Pat McAfee Show when discussing the 2024 College Football Playoff. With the field expanding to 12 this year, there will be a lot of extra teams fighting for at-large bids. The Power Four champs will automatically earn a spot.

The Big Ten has expanded with the addition of Oregon, Washington, USC, and UCLA. Herbstreit believes that there will be a surprise team in the field and it could come out of the Big Ten.

Washington viewed as a key game to their season
Vs. Washington, Sept. 27
This game is a major opportunity for Rutgers. Again, if Rutgers beats Virginia Tech, this has the chance to be an incredible atmosphere at SHI Stadium under the lights. It would almost certainly be a sold-out, loud crowd. It’s also the Scarlet Knights’ first game against one of the Big Ten newcomers. The Huskies, who lost to Michigan in the national championship game last season, have a new coach in New Jersey native Jedd Fisch while former quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was drafted eighth overall by Atlanta (they do have a solid QB now in Mississippi State transfer Will Rogers). Washington brought in other talented transfers but still has had a lot of turnover on both sides of the ball. Rutgers has a big chance here.
