Not surprised but worried that it took so long to make the decision. It indicates that he probably wasn't overwhelmingly impressive in camp.
Re: Eason is the starter.
in many cases that would be a fair assumption, and your fear completely valid. however Pete has historically played coy with the QB reveal. he announced Lindquist as starter only 1 week prior to Game 1, and Never did announce Browning as the starter - just rolled him out against Boise after the opening kick. Unlike Haener, Eason threw exactly ZERO picks in the spring, and few in August also from what I've heard.
Talent-wise he is best in the conference, or at least even with Herbert - very similar players. with better weapons than last year, and same great line, passing game should take a huge uptick.

Re: Eason is the starter.
His father is named Tony Eason, but he isn't the Tony Eason who played QB for the Patriots back in the 80's. He did play football, though, at Notre Dame.
So, if Jacob has a mediocre season but shows promise towards the end of it and decides to come back for another year rather than go into the NFL draft, what does that mean for Jacob Sirmon?

Jake Haener is transferring out LOL. 3rd QB to leave in 3 years.
Re: Eason is the starter.
wonder if Pete had an inkling that might happen, and if so, perhaps contributed to the delay of decision. still a mistake, imho. nevertheless, mark my words: Dawgs will miss Haener about as much as they missed KJ Carta Samuels. Good riddance, just one more schollie to add an impact recruit at a thinner position. and more reps for Sirmon and Morris, one of whom will need them eventually.

Haener leaving doesn't bother me, without an injury to Eason this year he never should have played a meaningful snap. But if he for a second feels he didn't get a fair shake he he is crazy. Besides garbage duty against ND state, he threw for negative yards last year with a game losing pick six! And was CLEARLY inferior in talent, yet given starters reps all off season, AND Pete said he would play against Eastern!

Maybe he'll be playing for Eastern soon.
Re: Eason is the starter.
I'm happy Haener and his low low ceiling is gone, but what a shameful sight looking at all the reader comments on the story in the Times - a bunch of misguided provincialists judging Haener for leaving the program so late before the season, when it was Petersen who didnt make the call until the day before. like he was supposed to transfer out while still in the running for the starting job? or like he is supposed to give up his dream of a career by holding a clipboard just to make some alumni less nervous about the readiness of the backup QB for one season, as if he somehow owes that to the fan base because he took a football scholarship? get a life people, and climb out of the 20th century.

I wonder if Petersen will force Haener to sit out a year like he did with Yankoff. I guess it would be too late to get playing time even with a community college at this point anyway.
