Anyone else worried about recruiting

Post by D-train » Wed Jun 28, 2023 2:44 pm

Seems we are way behind and again and almost all those that have recently committed are 3 star guys. I only saw one 4 star. We are a top 10 team. Should we be striving for at least one 5 star kid and at least a few 4 star guys??? btw how many 5 stars are their in the country each year.

There are 39 5 star recruits so seems we should have at least one. This type of distribution by Team Ranking in the Polls.

1. 5
2. 4
3. 4
4. 3
5. 3
6. 3
7. 2
8. 2
9. 2
10. 2
11-20. 1 each

I tend to agree.....I am worried about recruiting.

I realize a lot goes into the ratings, and a lot of people say to not get too hung up with the ratings. But I believe the ratings are a percentage of how great a player 'may' become and not a guarantee.

It is almost guaranteed that a 5-star guy will be great in college, but there are exceptions....Todd Morinovitch, Max Browne.
And it's not likely a 2-star guy will be great in college, but there are exceptions....Russell Willson, LaVeon Bell, JJ Watt.

so who knows what we have. I do know there is a greater chance of greatness with the more stars...just ask Alabama, Ohio & Georgia.

So if they can get 2 5s and 8 4s then can't we manage 1 5 and 4 4s after the season we just had. Maybe we have more 4s that I haven't heard about?
Ohio State's 2024 class stands at 12 commitments, including two five-star prospects and eight four-star prospects. Georgia, LSU and Penn State rounded out the top five of the recruiting rankings. Michigan last finished ahead of Ohio State in the recruiting rankings during the 2019 cycle.

If you look at Georgia's top-ranked 2024 recruiting class, it's almost unfair looking. The Bulldogs have commits from 19 players, three of them five-star and 11 of them four-star players.

So our highest rated recruit is only 424th in the country???? There are only 224 players drafted each year in the NFL draft so this guy would need to massively improve his ranking just to get drafted in the 7th round! wtf?

I just don't get all that into this anymore. Some of the guys I was most excited when we signed them? SaVell (sp) Smalls and Nick Montana! I had never heard of Steve Emtman. Maybe this is something I should be worried about, but I just am not. We are talking about kids that haven't played there Senior year of HS right now and acting like we know what kind of player they will be in two seasons?

the other reason high school recruiting has lost some of its shine is the transfer revolution. just getting them into the fold to start with doesnt mean as much as it used to, as so few prepsters are developed and good enough to earn playing time right away in any of the elite programs - particularly linemen. Now with the relaxed transfer rules you can pick up frustrated former 4-stars who have not been able to climb the depth chart fast enough, or have experienced coaching change, or any number of other reasons the school they initially choose can lose its luster.

at the same time teams can fill their holes with transfers that these class rankings arent counting, but you tell me if DeBoer and co. would have been happier landing Arch Manning (highest ranked prep QB) than Michael Penix (not even the highest rated transfer QB) as his first real catch!

Excellent point, and I am too lazy to research it right now, but it seems we had a few impact transfers come in again.
