He was excellent when playing for Leach. I have high hopes.

Deboer's system with Penix at the helm is miles away from Leaches Air Raid. I don't know that its a foregone conclusion that Rogers will just come in and be lights out. They probably promised him the job to get him to transfer, but I would still like to see Austin Mack get a fair chance to compete.

Of course the system is different, but do we really think the only way someone can be successful here is if they played in DeBoer and Grubb's system before? Mack had a year to prep, and maybe he will beat out Rogers. But if a prerequisite for playing here is having already played in the system? We need to stop getting transfers and work on loading up on HS kids that can come here and learn for a year. I really don't think that is the case though.

They don't necessarily need to have played in his system, But the deep ball seems to be a staple of what Deboer likes to do. Here is is highlight reel from that year. there are 32 TD passes in this video. 10 of them were thrown less than 5 yards, 10 in the 5-10 yard range, 3 in the 10-15 yard range, 3 in the 15-20 yard range, 4 in the 20-30 yard range and 2 were 30+. Maybe Rogers is capable of throwing deep. He just hasn't really shown it before. There is a reason that Leach had QB's that could put up 5000 yards in college but never do anything in the NFL. Deboer's system just seems to need more of a pro style QB to me.

I don't know much about what they did prior to getting to Washington, I imagine they can make tweeks to the offense. The deep ball is a huge threat, and forced teams to play Penix differently than they would have. But I know that DeBoer and Grubb have had lots of success, and it wasn't always with a guy that threw the deep ball like Penix. That said, not throwing it as well as Penix does doesn't mean he can't or won't.

You very well could be right, but I don't think they would have gone after this kid so hard if they thought he was a bad fit for what they do here. Until DeBoer and Grubb give me a reason to believe they can't win without the exact clone of Penix, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. I do agree with you though, they are going to give Mack a chance to compete. Promising Rogers the job doesn't mean he can't lose it.

So does he have more of a Bo Nix skillset? That worked out pretty well for Oregon and would have been great if they didn't have to plus us. LOL
