The Natty

Post by Captain 97 » Thu Jan 04, 2024 6:35 pm

Can't believe no one has started a thread on this match up yet. I am so tired of hearing people say things like Washington hasn't faced a defense like Michigan's yet. Well you know what? Michigan hasn't faced an offense like Washington's!

Michigan's defense looks impressive until you consider who they played. Here is the ranking of the teams they have played in terms of total offense.

UNLV 42
Ohio State 47
Penn State 53
Alabama 56
Maryland 63
Purdue 69
Indiana 99
Bowling Green 107
Nebraska 115
Rutgers 120
Minnesota 122
Michigan State 125
East Carolina 127
Iowa 130.

There are only 130 teams in FBS which means that Michigan played 5 of the worst 10 offenses in College football. They played nobody in the top 40 in offense and the average ranking of their opponents was 91!

On the flip side, The Defenses that Washington has played are a bit more respectable than the Offenses that Michigan has played. UW's opponents in terms of total defense are as follows....

Utah 13
Oregon 22 (2 times)
Texas 34
Oregon State 39
Arizona 48
Boise State 71
Michigan State 77
Washington State 79
Arizona State 89
Cal 102
USC 116
Tulsa 125
Stanford 129

The Dawgs played 5 games against top 40 defenses and the average ranking of their opponents was 69.

Hilarious. The worse offense in all of college football made the Big 10 Title Game. And we are supposed to be scared of moving to the Big 10!?

We faced five defenses inside the top 40. They faced not one offense inside the Top 40.

Outstanding post Cap. Thanks!

When you factor in that the Pac 12 defenses are on average going to take a hit because of all the top offenses they play? IMO? This stat is even a bigger deal. Michigan plays no offense all year. Anyone that watched Ohio State in the Bowl game can attest to that!

If Maryland put up 24 on them we can put up 48!

Dude could really spin it. I wonder if he has any regrets as far as the injuries go? Curious if he would have stuck it out this long, or even ended up at Washington, if not for the injuries in his first few seasons. Some of those balls in that video look an awful lot like what I have been watching the past two seasons here.

Reminder that sometimes oft injured guys aren't injury prone but just unlucky. I don't think he has missed a snap due to injury as a husky has he?

I said that to my son the other day. Someone was talking about the draft, brought up his "injury history". I looked at my son and said "he has played in what 27 straight games without missing so much as a play from injury, and that still matters!?" I do hope he falls in the draft some though, because after seeing him play Monday I am kind of excited about the prospects of seeing him in a Seahawks jersey.

Here is the beauty if we win on Monday.

We will end the season UNDEFEATED. We beat two teams that beat Alabama who beat Georgia who Beat FSU. AND we also beat the 2nd best team in the Country TWICE.

Literally nobody can come up with ANYTHING disputing the legitimacy of it. Might be the most undisputed NCAA Football champion EVER.

Agree, to a point. I think lately most of the Champions have been pretty undisputed. That said, we are in the Pac, so I imagine many, mostly dunderheads like Finebaum, might try to take shots. IMO, Oregon and Texas are better than Michigan. I honestly believe that four or five Pac 12 offenses are better than Michigans. That said? They do have the ability with that run game to take the air out of the ball, so to speak.

Looking at the team stats, I was surprised to see that our Run Defense is ranked 41st in the country in yards per game. Really not that much worse than Ohio State and Alabama who ranked 27th and 31st respectively. Some of that is due to the fact that Pac12 teams just don't run as much but still I think that they may not be quite as bad as people make them out to be. They are 83rd in Yards per rush allowed so that is just a bit below average.

I was also surprised to see that Michigan really isn't a stellar running team. They rank 61st in Yards per game. Boise State 6, Texas 24, Oregon 31, Utah 33, Tulsa 35, Cal 45 and Oregon State 56 all rank above them. Counting two games against Oregon, this makes Michigan the ninth ranked rushing team on our schedule.
