Sure, they could have gone in on the first season more in an effort to make the playoffs, made it a more satisfying experience for the fans, instead they tanked it. But if they are aiming their resources at playing a long game. Aiming for an even more sustainable playoff team in the future are you going to hold it against them? Are Astro fans complaining about them tanking 2013?
Vegas made it to the Cup Final their first year. They've made the playoffs every season since, including another conference final. They own the town. Their home arena experience is the best in the league. They have the ability to sustain their success and be a perennial contender. If you knew any of that you wouldn't be...oh wait, you probably do and you're just being contrarian again.
You are leaving out the fact that in a few short years that Vegas could plummet for several seasons. They do what they do now because they are clearly in win-now mode and they know it. They have aging veterans and young studs who are going to all want paid, mostly from other teams

I do know that, I also know that nobody saw Seattle having the same opportunity in their draft. Seattle is going their own route, let's see if it works

So Vegas could be really good for the first 6-7 years of their existence and then have to rebuild? Somebody needs to explain how in the world that could possibly be a bad thing.

Much better to tank for a few years in hopes of MAYBE being good in 4-5 years. Sounds like a more clever nuances edgy Jerry DiPoto type approach.

Man, I didn't even think of the Mariner approach. Now I feel like a total fool. :D

Actually I was thinking the mariner approach has always been half assed attempts at making the playoffs season after season after season. They should have tried tanking like 17-18 seasons ago.
