England has a King why can't we?
Jesus Christ…

Not sure Hawkandmariner88 was serious, but he can speak for himself. :)

1. The Founding Fathers, in devising our system of government, wanted to assure that we did NOT have a king.

2. The King of England really isn't much of a "ruler". He just sort of keeps busy with "royal duties" and shuttles between nights at his various castles.

I was stunned to learn that England hasn't had a true Monarchy for a very long time, over 300 years:

I'm not sure that's right. 1776 was 248 years ago....so it was parliament that sent the 'red coats' and not the King?
-But it was on-line, so it has to be right.

I always heard it was King George but there was a Prime Minister since 1721. Guessing there was a gradual transition of political power from the Monarchies to the Prime Minister. George probably still had a lot of power in 1776.

Yes, I think he was a lot more that a symbol. Reading about this era, I see that the parliament was its own center of power. (Kind of like having a president and a congress in the US?)
