On this day December 25 1776 General Washington and his army crossed the Delaware River.
Why? The idea was defeat the "Hessians" camped in Trenton, NJ. The Hessians were Germans hired by the British.
Why the Hell would he cross in the dark of night in iced waters of the river? The element of surprise!
The idea was to gain a victory and re-energize his troops and add recruits to the army.
Story is that he made preparations for this battle in only two days!
The strategy was to divide his forces into three groups and cross at different points of the river.
Only Washington's group actually made it across and he arrived 3 hours behind schedule.
Imagine 2400 soldiers in no doubt well-made boats crossed with watermen, soldiers, horses, ammo, heavy God damn cannons!
Our boys were hungry, tired, and freezing their asses off. It took 11 hours in the dark for everyone to cross.
On top of all that...the heavy rains turned into a freakin Nor'easter storm hitting them with snow and sleet.
The enemy commander Col. Rall knew they were coming but was an overconfident pompous ass.

It is pretty inspiring to see everyday Americans take different rolls in this journey.
