I didn't watch the speech, but I agree that it's inappropriate to sit on your hands when you have the opportunity, as a branch of government, to show recognition and empathy for suffering, courage, achievement, etc. Yeah I know it's highly staged political theater, but these are real people and you treat and respect them as such.

I personally know some republicans who care about curing cancer, so I think this is a bit of hyperbole. But I agree completely with your bigger point: trot out a young cancer patient for a made for prime time tear fest, while you are gutting the capabilities of cancer research.

Or maybe the private sector will step in and cure cancer, with all the tax breaks and DOGE dividends coming. (Government has failed; let big Pharma have a chance, right?)

I don’t agree that’s what happening with “your” tax dollars. But even if it’s not totally efficient. Removing it and then replacing it with nothing solves nothing. It just leaves sick people in the dark until you flaunt them on a stage.
