Yesterday on KIRO radio during Dory Monson's daily show he talked about how Governor Inslee has [predictably] blamed the fires on GLOBAL WARMING.
Monson interviewed some people in the Forestry Service and it was revealed that much of the problem is lack of maintenance in the forests due to environmentalist' concerns about endangered species habitats.
It was also brought up that numerous / countless massive blazes date back to when dinosaurs were patrolling Yakima. There was an enormous fire in that region in 1910.
As a side note, it sure is a ridiculous sight to see split screen video of Inlee sitting all by himself at his desk yammering away with his mask on...then of course we have to have an Official State Of Washington Sign Language Technician gesturing away on the left hand screen for the 10 deaf people who actually know sign language and who don't have closed captioning, or hearing aides.
Geeze, now I'm curious to know how much per year those Sign Language Technicians make....

At the risk of sounding like a hippie environmentalist, fires are part of the cycle of life in The West. "Global Warming" didn't cause the fires, any more than it causes hurricanes.

Do the climate-related changes that we see and project - such as a longer dry season, wetter winters below 5,000 feet elevation, and an earlier snowmelt - make devastating fires more likely? Possibly.

Now, it is really easy to find "some people" who will say just about anything, isn't it?

Yep, you are right about the history of huge fires. The certainly were some of the largest in the state's history in the early 1900s (including west of the Cascades in SW Oregon).

But a lot of the suppression is because of human population moving into the forests. If it's just the native trees, they'd let it burn.

And then of course, there is the non-native "cheat grass" that acts as an accelerant.

Certainly not quite so simple as blaming climate change or efforts to protect endangered species.

I think most people like the idea of preserving wild animal life and if some fires happen as a result..that's the way it goes..or is it..?
Could more / better strategic clearing of the worst fire hazards help keep the endangered species safer from fire in the long run..?
I think so and so do the folks Monson interviewed who work in Forestry Management.
Please [Gov Inslee] don't blame this on Global Warming.
We have no way of preventing many of the factors that contribute to Global Warming.
