What are the charges against Trump?

Trump is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records under Article 175 of the New York Penal Law.

Falsifying business records is a felony in New York when there is an “intent to defraud” that includes an intent to “commit another crime or to aid or conceal” a crime. In this case, prosecutors will have to prove that Trump is guilty of maintaining false business records with the intent to hide a $130,000 payment in the days before the 2016 election to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels to cover up an alleged 2006 affair.

Does that mean Trump is charged with 34 different crimes?

No, the indictment lists 34 felony counts under the same New York statute. Each count represents a separate instance of alleged misconduct, but not a different type of crime.

What are the likely punishments for those charges?

If convicted of the felony bookkeeping fraud charge, Trump faces up to four years in prison for each count. The judge could impose consecutive sentences, meaning Trump would have to serve them one after the other.

The charge does not carry a mandatory prison sentence, however. Even if convicted on all counts, Trump would not necessarily face jail time. As a first-time offender with no criminal record, legal experts say, it is uncertain whether the former president and 2024 White House candidate would be sentenced to prison if convicted.

Pretty funny (in a "don't let facts confuse you" way of being funny). According to the DA's office, there was an expenditure of $5K in federal funds on the Trump case (and nothing since 2021). But the DA's office does say they have over $800K in current multi-year grants, specifically for the Stop Violence Against Women Act Program, the Victim and Witness Assistance Grant Program, and the Justice Assistance Grant.

The "ALVIN act" (really 3rd grade stuff in naming this) presumably would eliminate this funding.

Here is the DA's office letter to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), which notes that New York City is below the national per capita average among big cities for crimes addressed by these programs, in including homicide rate.

Though they may be well intended, do you think the DA's office should have control over these grants? I suppose a better question, WHY is the DA's office involved in distribution of government grant dollars?

I never thought about this before but I assume it's because DAs prosecute crimes. If I'm a crime victim, that's a good thing.

I just looked this up and there is an association of DAs and they make members aware of grants that are available. https://ndaa.org/resources/grant-opportunities/

Great comment below that video:

"Funny how the prosecutor targeted the first president who's not a lifelong career politician."

Trump was the first president that wasn't a lifelong career politician? Seriously? Off the top of my head, wasn't Reagan an actor? Carter a peanut Farmer? Eisenhower was a general wasn't he?
