Dominion Voting Systems defamation suit against Fox News

Post by gil » Mon Apr 17, 2023 1:56 pm

Maybe I missed it, but I was surprised I could not find a thread here about this case (Dominion is seeking $1.6 billion from Fox News for broadcasting false "news" stories regarding 2020 election fraud). The trial was supposed to start today, but has been delayed until tomorrow, leading to speculation that Fox News is trying to settle without a trial.

Fox News settles. I guess they accept that the 2020 election was in fact won by Biden.

Yeah i'm sure it couldn't be that they suspected the judge and jury might be politically biased against them.

Could be. But $785.7 million is a very steep price to pay even if that is true. I was surprised by some of the judges pre-trial rulings, but why would Fox settle #1 they thought they were innocent (of "actual malice") or #2 they thought they might have a solid basis for an appeal (based on the pre-trial rulings)?

My suspicion is that Fox did not want to have the public see statements under oath (by Rupert Murdoch, Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, etc.) admitting there was no evidence against Dominion but that they kept broadcasting the claims because they didn't want to lose their audience.

I've been scanning the Fox News page for any stories about the settlement, and could only find something by searching. This is the only "news" reporting on the settlement I could find on the Fox News site this morning. Not mentioning the size of the settlement and not saying that they did anything wrong. But concluding:
Some of {Trumps's allies}, including members of his legal team, made false and unsubstantiated claims against Dominion Voting Systems and are the subject of separate defamation lawsuits.

Anyone realize the 'settlement' is tax deductible? Makes me wonder if this was all theater - that this is all about preventing a trial where damaging information could come out - about the gov - who has the powerand the absulote willingness to pressure both sides to shut up or else. Fox loses nothing here. This is not a loss, even though the usual suspects will paint it that way. This just seems odd.
