It wasn't about losing a friend as much as it was about feeling like the trade made the team less competitive now. Even Jerry said the following day that as a standalone deal it didn't improve the team but that it would make sense after he made some additional trades. And ex-players like John Smoltz seemed to agree that the Mariner players had a right to be upset at the time.
What would Smoltz know about how winning teams operate?

This is what I have been typing to blind eyes this entire time. There was ZERO chance he made this move with any intention of making the team better this year. One game out? Nope, trade for the future. Outstanding that Toro has all of a sudden become Ryan Sandberg. Did it make them better this year? Maybe, but that wasn't the organizations goal. One game out....two eyes on the future. John Smoltz wasn't the only one to see it.

With a stat line like this, I cannot fathom why Bauers is currently on the team.

WAR AB H HR BA R RBI SB
-0.7 228 48 3 .211 18 14 2

Is Dipshito reticent about getting rid of him? Heck, I was one of those who thought it a good move to bring in until France began proving he just might belong at 1B. But I am not a believer in keeping him on the roster now. His bat is weak, his defense is poor, perhaps he has good speed, but 2 stolen bases doesn't really prove that. He is proof positive that the organization was never in on the season to make the playoffs. Even when they proved to be close to playing themselves into a playoff spot.

What will be interesting to see is if the team actually makes a run at the playoffs next year. But there are a number of factors that can prevent that. Which is why you take your chances to make the playoffs when handed an opportunity. You don't look the gift horse in the mouth and then say, "Oh well, we'll make the playoffs next year."

I'd extend Dipshito's contract for one year. And if the team doesn't make the playoffs, I would publically explain to the press that he's being fired because he missed the chance to make the playoffs in 2021. He in no way understands how to run an organization outside of the Farm System. He does not know how to put together a winning roster.

Yeah, GM and manager changes should be on the table... quite a few missteps this year, especially. This group has a talent for even doing the right thing in a way that embarresses the fan base. There are a few young managers out there I really like, but Servais is not one of them... Gabe Kapler, Craig Counsel, David Bell, etc. I'm intrigued by Carlos Beltran. I don't know about a general manager, maybe an assistant GM from a good organization like the Rays, Red Sox, or Giants...

I get that Marmalejos is not a prospect. He's a formidable lifelong AAA player, not much speed, but he can run into a fastball once in awhile. I guess he's there as insurance and to protect prospects, force pitchers to pitch to prospects in from of Marmalejos... Still, it's obvious that Bauers isn't a breakout candidate, nor is Long.... Marm is probably out best option if we were really trying this year. He should have been brought up again by now.

Do you understand that he was basically shut down in the offseason from pursuing free agents? The Paxton deal was the exception because ownership somehow got involved and it was a one-year commitment.

I wish we had hitting prospects in AAA to protect...

But they are not really trying this year that's the issue. Dipoto stated the season is about player development and he has also commented he is sticking to his plan. To this point they are more interested in Bauer's future than Marm. You can complain about it but that's what it is
