Reports are that the Rays and Wander Franco agreed to a 12 year, $185M deal. He is 20 years old and a legit superstar-in-the-making.

If we agree to a $200M, 7 year deal for 31 year old shortstop who has had one great and one good season so far, then we are definitely getting fleeced.

If you had to choose between paying 7 years at $200M for Semien or getting nothing at all, which one would you pick, A or B?
That's a false dichotomy. Semien isn't the only - or even the best - option out there.
That wasn't the question, its hypotheitcal, and I'm just curious. Its not like it actually means its going to happen.

So one, or the other? Which is it?

I wouldn't do that deal for Semien. I'd go 5 at that AAV and that would be a probable overpay on years 4 and 5. But I don't want my team saddled with his age 38 and 39 seasons.
36 and 37 seasons. He wouldn't turn 38 until mid Sept of the 7th year.
Yep, you're right. Maybe I'd go 6 years then. Still worry about the back half of that commitment.

You could try and trade him when Noelvi and Arroyo are ready to take over.

Well, again, your hypothetical doesn't present a viable range of options. The way you phrased it - the answer is I would take Semien. But a better question might include options like (c) some other FA SS at a lesser cost, (d) trade for some other, cheaper 2B/SS and use the difference to pay for a 3B or stud outfielder or amaze-balls TOR pitcher.

But perhaps a better approach would have been to present my observations are rhetorical or as a question - do you agree that a Semien deal - compared to the pending Franco deal - is a comparatively bad deal for the M's. They get an older SS/2B with less potential for a substantially greater cost? And even that question is a little unfair since the Rays aren't competing with other teams for Franco as a FA - they are just locking in a young prospect to a long term deal assuming he will blossom into the kind of player he's predicted to be. But either way, the Semien asking price seems hefty (and even a little silly) by comparison.

Semien's asking price beginning to leak out. More than $200M and 7 years. Woo, that's a big number! Thats an AAV of $28.5 a season.

If that's what it takes to land him, then count me in.

Plus I found us a possible starter that could be an option for us. He's definitely a sleeper, but I guarantee that Dipoto has at least looked at him.

Gerald has eliminated a majority of available FA with his rhetoric and it’s not lost on a killer like Boras. By the time we are done with this shit show we are probably paying Correa money for a Semien player

It is extremely silly. But then again, that's why Semien went hired Boras. He wants to sign something silly. I can't blame him for wanting to get paid.

Man I'll be shocked if we do it 200 million dollar contract
The Yankees seem to be out of the SS market too.

bpj: "A guy like Story will get eaten alive moving from Colorado to Seattle. Similar to the drop-off from Arenado."

twitter guy: "What are you even talking about, Arenado had a 113 wRC+ compared to his career 118. And he had 4 WAR. You're dumb, anti-vaxxer bitcoin-bro. Haven't you even heard of the Coors Hangover??"

Meanwhile, Arenado OPS (fWAR)

2016: .932 (5.0)
2017: .959 (5.7)
2018: .935 (5.8)
2019: .962 (6.1)
2021: .807 (4.0)

Yeah, no drop-off there at all..... As long as he's got that wRC+, I guess we're good.....

His wRC+ argument totally proves your point for you. Story had a 100 OPS. Literally an average hitter. If he maintains it for us he would be right with these guys.
