The point is that the only let them pitch 3-5 innings once a week and they still get shoulder fatigue and then the next season the say they have to limit their innings because their idiot plan to limit their innings completely back fired so they didn't pitch enough innings. It is a self imposed vicious cycle that they only have themselves to blame.
Come on with your cobbled together narrative. The fact is Kirby was injured, the mariners treated it with rest, this season he seems healthy again.
.And don't give me "well, he had shoulder fatigue." Shoulder fatigue. That's hilarious. Like Kikuchi going down w/ a neck issue. Maybe it was serious, maybe it wasn't
It doesn't matter if it was serious or not? Give me a break with this stuff
I guess you don't see the obvious coincidence here. Kirby wasn't injured. You can tell by the fact that he pitched 20 days after he went 5 innings on 5/14. Normal rest for him that yr was 7 days. So they extended it by 2 weeks. Then the babying returns with 2.1 innings and outings every 8 days. He threw all of 18 innings in June!
The org was overly sensitive to any issue going on. Yet had they allowed Kirby to really open up, really throw on a normal routine -- i.e every 5-6 days, 6+ innings, 100+ pitches as effectiveness decides -- he likely would feel as he does today, which is really good.
They continually put themselves in this vicious cycle as Dtrain stated. They fucking baby their high drafted arms, then they force themselves to hold them back some more in rookie and soph seasons with M's and have to sacrifice players in their system to go out and acquire an arm for more depth, to cover the innings they won't let these kids take on.
WHEN THERE'S ABSOLUTELY ZERO EVIDENCE THAT ANY INCREASE IN INNINGS WHETHER IT BE 1 OR 200 ADVERSELY AFFECTS ARMS.
To the contrary. We have routinely seen young SPs like Casey Mize, Chris Paddack, Dustin May, Carlos Rodon and on down the line go down with TJ
EVEN AFTER BEING PROTECTED!!
They have zero data that tells them their way is protecting their pitcher. Yet they keep on selling it to the media, selling it to fans like the bloody snake oil salesmen that they are ... as if because they've done this, Kirby and Hancock and Gilbert will all be injury free for the next decade. Yeah, ok. It was all because you took it easy on them for three years.
Meanwhile, the real truth is that they don't know. Just like Brad Pitt says in Moneyball.. "you guys don't know. You don't. You think you do, but you don't."
It's likely all about how much rest these pitchers got between seasons in their youth from 9 on up to 18. Did they pitch all year long? Or did they rest for 5 months? After that, it's about stressful innings. Over working the arm when it is fatigued. That's the issue. You can throw 9 10-15 pitch innings every 5/6 days w/o issue. Given full 4 months of rest every yr.
