You have tunnel vision on the first pick and just entirely ignored my MLB is not NBA point. It's not just 1 (to 3) pick(s) that's affected.

Do you know what waivers are? I could drop about 20 links that show Dipoto does.
Huh? I could have sworn I posted "And that's exactly my point, the chances that we're missing out on the upcoming MLB draft's version of Zion Williamson is just about zero". I mean, it's right there.

Anyway, I'm at least 99 percent right on this. The chances of this one team jumping ahead of us and getting the next Mike Trout while we get the next Mike Hunt is less than one percent. Math says so. As for waivers, big deal. So the Pirates are going to be ahead of us in line when some scrub gets DFA'd.

Look, if you want to root for the team to lose, then that's your right. Some of us prefer watching them win.

  :?
Even this response focuses on a 1st rounder while ignoring the rest...As does your self-quote. What's right there is a tunnel-vision that doesn't apply to the broader picture of roster construction. None of the Mariners decent draft picks were Zion Williamson either, that doesn't mean we shouldn't care about the ability to acquire the best possible. If there's 3 less players every round because they won a bunch to entertain your "right now" there's more chance that the player they'd have had as best available including those 3 is now gone than you seem to grasp. Continuing to win will likely drop them 2 more spots. The top prospect list has exactly 5 first round picks including 4 that show this FO's ability to select the guy that has a higher chance to make it and impact the show. In every round. No championship team has ever been made up entirely of first round picks. No team is the average of all past teams and predicting based on the past of others is not sound beyond getting a baseline of possibility. It's only the beginning step, not the full answer.

Dipoto plays on waivers often, Tom Murphy ring a bell? You choose to feel whatever feels good to you, I'll be over here using broader logic. Maximizing opportunity is the name of the game in competition.

The Mariners acquired Murphy in a trade with the Giants. I will continue to make that choice, because it does feel good.

Murphy was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants on March 25, 2019. On March 28, Murphy was designated for assignment after failing to make the Opening Day roster. The next day, the Giants traded Murphy to the Seattle Mariners for Jesus Ozoria.

Giants had waiver priority and M's almost missed out entirely. They wouldn't have had to part with Ozoria if they'd have had priority either.

Here are the MLB drafts for 2012, 2013 and 2014. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Majo ... ball_draft https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Majo ... ball_draft https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Majo ... ball_draft

Count how many of these guys are actually contributing at the major league level. Not very many. Even most of the first rounders haven't and will never make it to The Show. Just about no matter where you draft it's a crap shoot. This is why I rooted for the Mariners to win today instead of staying one spot ahead of the Pirates.

You wanted a link, you got three. Want some more?

Yes, I know. That doesn't mean the Mariners would have claimed him if the Giants hadn't, there were several teams between the Giants and the Mariners. The Giants won 73 games in 2018, the Mariners won 89. Would you really want the team to lose 17 more games so that they can be able to claim a backup catcher off of waivers and hope to catch lightning in a bottle?

Oh, and Ozoria is carrying a 4.03 ERA in the minors thus far. I'm kinda thinking he isn't being missed.

Your entire thinking ignores opportunity cost. It's not about any specifics of the past but about having the best future opportunities at the lowest cost.

"Opportunity Cost". Ooooooooooookay. That doesn't really relate to this in any way, shape, or form, but on the bright side it's always neat to read something that you've never seen another human being post. I'd like to use that one sometime, can I?

I'm glad I could enlighten you. Actually it's seeming rather pointless. You still don't seem to understand what I'm saying at all. Your sarcasm and stubborn opposition is tedious. At least it's not willfully ignoring opportunity cost, you simply don't understand how things other than "win today" could apply or matter.
