I would like a Mariner reporter to look into JK’s early years….few people are aware that he never played high school baseball….He has been handled differently….Played elite baseball camps and never got his jersey dirty. Finally powder boy is getting humbled and his world is upside down. Virtually no time spent starving in the minors……Why did Jerry not see he wasn’t ready for prime time last year instead of bringing him up at leadoff….Almost appears Jerry was trying to embarrass his stupid ass……. The trouble I see is Jerod has mental deficiencies either bi polar or worse. Just a complete failure and Jerry can’t hide from the scrutiny….The kid clearly wasn’t ready

Jarred Kelenic is 23 years old with his entire life ahead of him.

Kelenic is likely to have a career ... just perhaps not in Major League Baseball.

But Kelenic has already played 131 more MLB games than (almost?) everyone on this forum.

Wishing Kelenic the best wherever life takes him.

I ran an age filter. There are 1418 players who have had at least 400 Plate appearances through age 23. Jarred of course is the worst at .169. There are 19 guys who were under .200 at age 23. The most hopeful comps are Mike Schmidt who at age 23 had a .197 AVG through .483 PA and Matt Williams who had a .198 Avg through 747 PA. That's still quite a bit better than .169 but at least it gives a slight ray of hope. The rest are a bunch of guys who faded into history with un-notable careers.

And he never put up great numbers in the minors.

He was a fluff piece. Dipoto got drawn by the allure of another player who uses a weighted donut for batting practice or some such nonsense.

Kelenic has been historically bad. That's not a bad data point, it's an inconvenient one for those who keep saying Kelenic just needs time.

Time and talent. That's what Kelenic needs.

The thing that irks me about the Kelenic narrative is this notion that is promoted that he has the talent and he just needs to get his head straight. I hear that literally all the time and I wholeheartedly disagree. Recognizing pitches and having the ability to hit a breaking ball is not a mental issue it is a talent issue. He doesn't have that skill set. being in a good frame of mind is not going to help his vision and its not going to help him make more contact on the slow stuff.

I don't think his career is over. I think he's made tangible improvements to his game, but he needs more time at AAA. He needs to hit breaking balls better and he needs a better 2-strike approach, and ideally he would become a better low ball hitter. I'd like to see him dominate AAA for several months, which to me means hitting around .320 with a K-rate under 18% and a walk rate above 10%, or something like that.

I would not trade him, but I would not go into next season planning for him to be on the major league roster. He has options and there are far worse players that have occupied a spot on the 40.

Also, since he doesn't play the infield and is a left-handed thrower, I don't see much potential for him as a bench player on this team. He's probably a starter or a AAA player.
