It was a joke buddy. But let's be glad JK didn't let him make that mistake twice.GL_Storm wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 1:38 pmI don't know what you're talking about. The White contract was a dumb move (for the Mariners, great for the player) but the money isn't that big a deal and I've never heard JD imply otherwise.Cascade Kid wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 6:09 amThis is JD's way of saying that he 'fucked up' and Evan White's future earnings are holding shit up.

I bet they offered JK close to $100M. Something like 6/$15MCascade Kid wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 3:48 pmIt was a joke buddy. Sorry i meant Diamondbacks not Padres.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Thu Dec 08, 2022 2:33 amNot seeing that analogy, cheaper than the padres? Well yeah, padres ran a $220 mil payroll in 2022 and they just signed Bogaerts to a $280 mil contractSibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Wed Dec 07, 2022 4:29 pmWe are to the Astros what the Padres are to the Dodgers. Actually, we're cheaper than the Padres. Can't wait to see who this year's Winker is going to be.

Jarred Kelenic, the man who turned down $90 mil because he was better than that.

How would I know that was a joke? You do understand, I hope, that text doesn't convey tone and body language? You also don't post all that often.Cascade Kid wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 3:48 pmIt was a joke buddy. Re: Brock on M's complete reversal
Evan White is going to get paid $7M in 2024 and $8M in 2025.
A $7M salary would make him the 8th highest paid player on the Mariners in 2023 (fortunately he's only making $3M in 2023, which still makes him our 13th highest paid player).
On a 26 man roster with a $130M budget that represents over 5% of payroll to a bum they screwed up and gave a contract to.
5% is 1/20th of a teams payroll. On a 26 man roster that's not insignificant.
Same amout they're trying to trade Marco and Flexen off to save.
White's contract is absolutely a problem in the next couple years.

Well now you know. I'm also one of the ole school posters from the Times forum and when things started to fade I moved onto other things. I'm here now though.GL_Storm wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 5:28 pmHow would I know that was a joke? You do understand, I hope, that text doesn't convey tone and body language? This was a out of context joke. However, this isn't the first time JD has be caught being speculative since he tried to offer a similar deal to JK in the hope that the gamble would pay off through the arbitration years. In hindsight, JD was wrong doing this twice. And as bpj just followed up, these monies owed to White will have a lasting impact over the next few years.
Re: Brock on M's complete reversal
Especially for a team that INSISTED in getting $1.75M back from the Brewers AND a team that just sold one of their Rule V picks for maybe a $100k.bpj wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 6:10 pmEvan White is going to get paid $7M in 2024 and $8M in 2025.

Re: Brock on M's complete reversal
A couple of things amidst all your whining and bitching in this thread:
Why are we re-posting a Brock Huard column? This guy is an ex-QB with zero baseball expertise. He's not a writer. This "column" was a re-post of what everyone already knows, zero unique thoughts. I don't want to see another Huard post ever again on this site. Fuck Huard.
Second, aside from perhaps the Cody Bellinger signing, what contract can you point to over the last week and say, "I'd do that! Give me that player on THAT contract."
Do you want Aaron Judge thru age 40 at $40m per?
Do you want Xander Bogaerts thru age 41 at $27.5m per?
Do you want Trea Turner thru age 40 at $27m per?
Do you want Brandon Nimmo thru age 38 at $20m per?
I mean what the fuck are we talking about here?
The #Mariners did their due diligence. They checked in on every FA that filled a need and realized how strong the market was and rightfully said "fuck that."
You can't make emotional decisions in this game. It's going to be really fun to track teams like the Padres, Rangers and the Mets who are essentially building their entire clubs through the FA market. They are throwing away draft capital and the finances to hold onto their own home-grown stars in the name of signing the best players for a 3-4 yr peak window. Welp, better cross everything you have for good health across the board. Better knock on wood that things break your way.
