Mariners hitters tonight needed to see more pitches, especially the top 3. These numbers are fairly typical for Julio and France, less so for JK.

Julio: 4 plate appearances, 10 pitches
France: 4 plate appearances, 11 pitches
JK: 4 plate appearances, 10 pitches
Suarez: 4 plate appearances, 16 pitches
Cal: 4 plate appearances, 18 pitches
Teo: 4 plate appearances, 14 pitches
JP: 4 plate appearances, 14 pitches
TayTram: 3 plate appearances, 16 pitches
Wong: 3 plate appearances, 14 pitches

As a team, they struck out 10 times and walked twice. They hit 0 home runs and 1 double, with 8 hits overall. The top of the order didn't even get 5th plate appearances. Overall, it was a pretty easy night for Astros pitchers.

Getting back to the pitch counts, the top three didn't give themselves much of a chance. Ty, when he's hitting, can get away with swinging at the first pitch that looks good to him. But he's not hitting right now and the one thing he could do to help himself is the one thing he's not doing.

The offense isn't good because they don't work opposing pitchers the way they did in 2021 and 2022. They aren't grinding each AB, trying to get pitchers to throw just a few more pitches and make a mistake. And they barely walk.

One counterpoint is that Javier was pretty dominant tonight and in the zone at 55%, so he was challenging Mariners hitters with his stuff, and that is no doubt one reason for the low pitch counts and only two walks. Some of this is just baseball with a good pitcher on the mound. But even so, just try and take a few more pitches and extend these ABs and see what happens.
