Why is that?
Don't you think his music speaks for itself?
I don't particularly enjoy the genre, but George Jones is a country music legend.
Sorry, I should have said; Isn't it obvious.

Sorry, but my version of Country Legends would include:
Johnny Cash
Merle Haggard
Reba
Toby Keith
George Straight
Dolly
Patsy
Loretta
Even Tammy W
and Garth

George Jones was never in our home, so I guess my parents didn't like him very much.

Jones transcended the genre
Johnny Cash had a stock answer to that oft-asked question, "Who is your favorite singer?" "You mean," he teased, "apart from George Jones?"

Yes, there's pretty much universal agreement among country singers that Jones, who died Friday at age 81, was the greatest of all time. From the oldies -- Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard -- to the relative newbies -- Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis -- all were of one mind.

That's impressive, Donn, thanks for posting.

This thread has become quite lengthy and I don't recall if anyone has mentioned any of the early U2 stuff. I think this one is phenomenal (complete with the world's most impressive mullet).

Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong if you include jazz on this list. And then there was Glenn Miller, who was long before my time. Recently, Carlos Santana, guitarist (not the former Mariner).

Sure, fundamental American genre. It once ruled the music scene, did rock kill it?

How about the James Brown orchestra performing Lee Morgan's, The Sidewinder, from the legendary Paris concert. Really happy you brought it up.

There was also some great performances in many musicals between the late 30's (Somewhere Over the Rainbow?) and the mid-60's but we often overlook them because so many people can't stand musicals. One of my favorite singers was/is Linda Ronstadt. She sang so many different genres it's hard to pin down only one great performance.
