I'd rather try to trade for Soto than Alonso. He is a much better player at a position where we have more need and I think we would have a better chance at resigning him with his Buddy Julio here.

Yeah I definitely considered Soto but he would cost more both in terms of lives and treasure and would pushed payroll to almost $200M God forbid. Is he buddies with Julio? I hadn't heard that.

Julio Rodriguez on Juan Soto, we used to play call of duty against each other...that being said, all those guys from the DR are probably buddies. I doubt that really affects their FA decisions

Observation: Maybe you could throw Marco into the mix here. Cards do need some pitching, and Marco does have value as a bottom of the rotation guy. Add Marco and throw in $5M or so - maybe the Redbirds would be happy to welcome home the prodigal son. We could feel real good at the Yamamoto FA signing with Marco gone.

I think an obvious secondary piece in a trade for Pete Alonso is Ty France. Of course, they would have to buy into the idea that France will rebound next year. I'm not sure who the main piece would be. JK would make sense there given the lack of outfielders. I think it's 50/50 JK gets traded.

The A's traded Matt Olson with two years of control remaining around a package for Cristian Pache, a guy who put up a .459 OPS for the A's before they flipped him to the Phillies.

One year of a 1B isn't going to bring much of a return these days. The Mets would be lucky to get a rebound candidate who is supposedly a 5 tool talent for one season of Alonso if they believe Kelenic was any good to begin with.

Kelenic could easily be sold as a change of scenery guy imo. I'd consider Kelenic for one year of a 1B an overpay. Which is usually what it takes to complete a trade. I'd do it in a heartbeat. I don't think it would make our sissy fans very happy, so there is pain involved in dealing Kelenic.

It might be possible to get both Alonso and McNeil. I'm not deeply familiar with the Mets and their plans and how they feel about various prospects, but they could play Ronny Mauricio at 2B if they decided to move McNeil. This is sort of assuming that they're taking a step back next year, that Cohen has figured out he can't buy his way to a championship. On the other hand, they might just prefer to stick with McNeil. Mauricio is very high upside, but high risk as well.

I'm not putting a stake in the ground on who should go to the Mets in return, but obviously a bunch of you would like to see JK get moved, which I think is reasonable. And as I just said a little bit further up the thread, I could see Ty France going as well, because they will need to put somebody at 1B.

But the interesting thing is the salaries:

Alonso: $21,000,000 (arb estimate)
McNeil: $10,250,000 (2024)

And then the rest of McNeil's contract goes like this:

2025: $15,750,000
2026: $15, 750,000
2027: $15,750,000 (team option with 2M buyout)

From a payroll efficiency and luxury tax perspective, moving both players makes a lot of sense for the Mets, and having a willingness to take on that payroll liability should dramatically reduce the cost in players for the acquiring team. The big question is how would the Mariners feel about those 2025 and 2026 salaries for McNeil?
