Kind of surprised that Cal isn't on their Fangraphs has him rated 2nd in the AL for catcher defense. He was also second in runners caught stealing.

I'm also surprised to see Carlos Santana as a finalist for First Base in the NL. I guess guys don't just start hitting better after leaving Seattle; they start fielding better too. :x

I still cannot believe the level of energy and angst I has seen spent on the M's "Snubs" They are acting like Geno is Brooks Robinson AND a family member AND a Mariner legend that just led us to a WS title. He is a nice fun guy but his hacking ways and lack of power cost us the playoff this season.

No idea how or why people care about subjective defensive awards that will be long forgotten before the Thanksgiving Turkey comes out of the oven...

It's funny to watch these granolas cry about Geno.

The problem is Geno's bat didn't even earn him a position.

Most of the catchers and shortstops out there would make great third basemen.

But they hit like catchers and shortstops, so of course it wouldn't impress anybody when they move to an easier defensive position and excel.

Same goes for Geno. He had a below average bat for third base. He didn't even deserve to have his position. No reason to reward him for his glove for a position he didn't earn with his bat.

According to wRC+ Geno was the 16th ranked 3B bat out of 21 qualified players.

Nobody would be surprised when a SS moves positions and puts up good defense and range at 1B. But when they still hit like a shortstop... are they really a first baseman?

Great observation. Might the solution be to move Geno to 2B??? He hits like a 2B. There are sooooo many 3B out there that we could trade for that would be instant upgrades, but Geno is blocking them. And he's practically untradeable because, as you point out, he's a below average 3B who is owed a crap ton of money.

Or maybe trade Ty and move Geno to 1B where he platoons with Ford?

I dunno. I just know I am over the "good vibes" crap. I'll have good vibes when we make the playoffs.

Well, there was that one time when he made that good play. Wasn't that enough?

Interestingly the positional adjustment for 3B and 2B is the same so it doesn't help improve ones values. Also Geno has a great arm which would be wasted at 2B.

I just feel like if his bat doesn't translate to 3rd, it's not going to translate to 1st, is it? Hitting better than Ty France doesn't make ones production equal to a MLB 1st Baseman. It just make your bat better than another guy that shouldn't play 1st because his bat is dreadful. I'd like to replace every corner we have, IF and OF...and add a DH while we are at it. But, that won't happen. We'll add a below average bat to play one of those four spots, some guy that had a pretty good year two or three years ago, but is a bargain now...and then we will throw the rest of the trash we already have out there, and talk about platooning and how fresh they will be. I don't give a damn if the dog shit is fresh, it's still dog shit.

Not to mention there is a 90% chance France rebounds at least somewhat Geno continues to decline so the tiny advantage he had this season .714 vs. .705 OPS reverses big time.

Totally agree and yes fresh dogshit actually smells a lot worse too! lol

All good points, guys.

My thinking was not that Geno would suddenly turn into a gold glover with a simple change of scenery.

My thinking was that he's untradeable unless we basically pay 100% of his salary (and the fact that Jerry seems to have a man crush on him). Moreover, there are some super stud 3B out there - either by trade or FA. So if we moved Geno, that would free up 3B for, say, a Matt Chapman. Let Geno play 1B/DH with Ford and we've got a lefty and a righty combo. Trade France - he's likely the most moveable of the 3 of them.

Then again, we could keep Geno at third and get rid of Ty and get a legit 1B and DH. That works, too. :?

And yes, DT - shoveling shit from one corner of the yard to the other still leaves your yard stinking of dog shit. Best bet: toss it over the fence to the neighbor's yard.
