1:36 Is dipoto getting his just due? He's made unpopular trades that have worked out, drafted well, shed payroll , and sits in first place in the AL west.
Steve Adams
1:37 Dipoto constantly gets more flak than he deserves because people like to make snap reactions to trades, and a lot of trades are long plays. The Mariners are in healthy shape with a dominant rotation/bullpen and ample prospect firepower to augment a talented but flawed lineup. Their rebuild lasted all of 2-3 years, compared to 5-6 years like we've seen in Baltimore, Detroit and other places. That's not a critique on those organizations -- just a tip of the cap to Dipoto. He's really good.

Off topic, but another perspective on the Seattle front office from Tuesday's chat at MLB Trade Rumors:
Re: Trade deadline poll
I don't know that Dipoto gets too much flack for trades.
His biggest problem is the majority of the payroll dollars he's had available the last 9 years he has invested in players that led to poor returns in terms of production.
Here's an excerpt from what I wrote in 2022, and he's followed the same course since:

Somewhere analytics provide a metric to compare those numbers to the numbers of other organizations.bpj wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2024 8:37 pmI don't know that Dipoto gets too much flack for trades.

In the pre 2023 and pre 2024 off seasons he Spent about $80M for negative WAR. My analytics tells me that is a lot worse than most Orgs.

His trades haven't been anything to write home about either. a few wins but a whole lot more terrible trades. The only things that he has done consistently well is to develop starting pitching and find diamonds in the rough in the pen.
Re: Trade deadline poll
Just mind boggling they can be so good at one thing and so terrible at another. It is like a golfer hitting 350 yard drives down the middle of the fairway 97% of tee offs but averaging 70 putts per 18 holes.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2024 10:15 pmHis trades haven't been anything to write home about either. a few wins but a whole lot more terrible trades. I am focused on a huge upgrade from Haniger he is slow 26.3 ft./s he’s not hitting well enough so I was looking at Rucker who’s up at like 27 ft./s or 28.6. Another option would be the Astros guy who’s also super slow but has the big bad.
Re: Trade deadline poll
Not sold that guys listed really help us that much where somebody else I don’t know helps out in OF. I see them rolling dice France/ralet/lockyear at 1st so we need an OF

M's need more contact, but also need more thunder in their lineup. They could also use another high end arm for the back end of the pen. Mason Miller would benefit this team a whole lot more than say Luis Robert would.

For the last few weeks I have been trying to envision a scenario where the M’s pulled off a blockbuster trade for Rooker and Miller. It’s fantasy, but it would propel us from World Series long shots to serious contenders.
Even if we could afford the asking price, I am not sure the A’s would help out division rivals that much. Like I say, I’m allowed to dream.
