My only guess is that its something like the FO knew they were sticking it to Trader Jerry by cutting payroll in the offseason so they probably promised him back then - regardless of how the season goes - we know we're f'ing you therefor you won't get fired at the end of the year. Thing for Jerry is, if he has any respect for himself and what he claims to be as a baseball exec, when he has a conversation with Ownership and if they tell him no increase in payroll or even another decrease - he should just resign then/there and say i'm out because he won't survive another year of baseball like this. If I was him - ownership either gives me the ability to fix this or I won't be their scapegoat for another horrible year.
We need to get an undercover video of Jerry admitting that he has a profit sharing plan and is incentivized to limit payroll like this one:

I wonder how he would do if he had a budget just below the so called cap?
He still would not spend it. He is like Warren Buffet, a billionaire that lives in a shithole cracker box rambler because he grew up in the depression.

Genuine question. If you owned a team, would you hire him to be your GM?

If he resigned, I'm not sure he would get another GM job. Maybe in a lesser role.
You aren't related to TraderJerry are you? LOL

He isn't the GM he is the POBO. He has too big an ego to take a demotion. He has probably made at least $25M over the past Decade. I imagine he would just retire.

Definitely not, but some are willing to take gambles that lead to even more money. The gamble is spending more to win more, which would grow the fan base, more sellouts, merchandise, etc...

Mariners have been a cash cow for awhile now, so they're less likely to gamble. As long as the Mariners always seem to be close to making the playoffs, or on the verge of greatness, things will stay the same. Hope sells.
I think a lot of teams would have Jerry DiPoto at the top of their candidate list. But some teams would pass because of the lack of consistent winning. He isn't Dave Dombrowski. And some owners would be turned off by his personality. But I think he would definitely get a job with one of the mid or lower franchises. I don't see him getting one of the better jobs.
I'm not saying there aren't because I don't know, but are there many other GM's that get another chance after 9 years with a .515 win% and 1 playoff appearance ?

Not a chance he'd be on my list, he can't build a winner.
There's also his time with the Angels, so it's more than 9 years without a consistent winner. But, what he has done is hired the right people to massively improve the farm system and the amateur scouting that feeds it. And then there's the improved pitching development at the upper levels of the minors and in the majors. We also don't know how Mariners ownership is viewed by the rest of the league. Does working for this group give someone like DiPoto an excuse to have not produced more than one postseason team in 9 years? It didn't help Bavasi or Zdurenciek as neither got another shot at the top job.

But my guess is that he'll get at least one more chance at the top job in an organization if he's let go here.

In nine seasons under Jerry Dipoto, the Mariners have posted a cumulative regular-season record of 689-649 (.515), including a 340-289 (.541) since the start of the 2021 season.

In the nine seasons before Dipoto's arrival, the Mariners posted a record of 671-787 (.460).

The Mariners are not the Los Angeles Angels, who are now guaranteed a ninth straight losing season despite their location in an attractive market.

The Seattle front office faces challenges of finances, geography and environment. Dipoto would have no shortage of suitors if he left the Mariners.

If Dipoto left, by his volition or not, would the Mariners be able to upgrade with his replacement? Do top baseball executives want to join the Seattle franchise?

Doug, it is surprising you use regular season records to defend a complete scum bag trash human.

Projection is not confined to baseball analytics.

I hadn't understood the announcement, he got a contract extension. So that would probably include a raise

I agree with everything you're saying and I do think he would get another shot. But I don't think he would be on every team's list and I doubt he would get one of the premier jobs. More likely, it would be a mid to bottom tier team that would value his track record of building up the farm system, or at least hiring the right people to do that job. But the teams that make winning a priority would, I believe, look skeptically at his instincts for roster construction. He's pretty much always had some ability to spend and yet only one postseason appearance, which only came after more postseason slots were added to the format.
