You're looking at batters now as if they just suck compared to then, instead of looking at the reality that it's the pitching that has improved to alter the game.

In 2007 (first yr velo data was available) there were 4 qualified SP's in MLB with 100+ innings that had an average fastball velocity >95mph.

In 2024 there are 33 SP's in MLB with 100+ innings that have an average fastball velocity >95mph.

In 2007 there were 22 qualified RP's in MLB with an average fastball velocity >95mph.

In 2024 there are 89 qualified RP's in MLB with an average fastball velocity >95mph.

In 2007 there were 38 SP's with an avg fastball velocity >92mph.

In 2024 there are 98 SP's with an avg fastball velocity >92mph.

That's an average of 3 per team now compared to 1 per team in 2007.

You get the idea.

It's a different ballgame now and Ichiro wouldn't be doing any better than anyone else imo.

I agree pitching has gotten better.

I don't agree that hitters have gotten better. Certainly not going to even consider that a 41 year old Justin Turner is a better hitter than a 28 year old Ichiro.

Ichiro would be a star in today's game just like he was back then.
Ichiro was always overrated, some of you just have trouble grasping the fact that his style of play didn't help the team much.

He was a great singles hitter. Unfortunately there's not much value there.

Justin Turner and Cal Raleigh have both put up a 112 wRC+ this season, just like Ichiro did when he was 28.

Pretty good, but not great.
when I lived in Seattle I went to 25 +/- games a year. Ichiro would hit all kinds of balls out of the field during batting practice. Come game time , no way. He was only ME ME ME. He did not give a shit about anything other his stats.

Wouldn't a home run been a stat?

Actually i feel the opposite, I think he felt the best way he could contribute to the team was to get on base, that's the way he went about it

He hit Fn HR out of the park in batting practice. He would'nt try during the game.

Because he was too selfish... Sorry but that doesn't make sense to me

Unfortunately, he was wrong.

Especially when he would "try to get on base" when there was a runner on first base and the defender would just throw the guy out at second base.

Somebody asked about comparing Ichiro's double plays to Edgar's. I bet Ichiro grounded into substantially more fielders choice outs than Edgar did. Maybe by multiples.

Or when there was a runner in scoring position, and he would still try to slap his way onto first base and the run wouldn't score anyways.

All Ichiro ever cared about were his Hit totals imo.

That's what I said. He was all ME ME ME. He was worried about his stats (selfish)

Okay, so the guys that do nothing but swing for the fences aren't thinking selfishly, they are doing it for the team
Chicks who dig home runs aren't the ones who appeal to me.

Donn if you had a team of 9 Ichiro;s on one team they would probably lose more games than the WHITE SOX are going to lose this year.

Adam Dunn won't be a first ballot hall of famer.
